Transcriberıs Notes:
The use of an * indicates an omission or error made in the original document or a
clarification by this transcriber.
The use of a "?" indicates a word or letters that could not be read, due to the
quality of the original document.
The use of a caret "^" indicates the following letter has been superscripted.
Passengers were numbered by the transcriber for ease of reference; there are no
passenger numbers on the original passenger list.
This is an excellent example of a passenger list showing how a
researcher must study the entire list, to understand the handwriting.
Be alert for possible abbreviated given names. Elise may mean Elise or
it may mean Elisabethe? Mathe or Mathilde? Ch may be Christ or Christian?
The letter Y is used many places where the initial letter is usually J,
such as Yohann instead of Johann, possibly abbreviated as Yoh, and Yacob for
Jacob (See passenger 1 for example of "J").
Several sets of letters are written so nearly alike that they may be
incorrectly deciphered: a/e/o may be mistaken for one another, n/u the same,
as also capitals G/Y, F/P/T, H/W, K/R. Be especially alert to these
look-alikes.
ISTG page _01 begins with passenger 1 and ends at passenger #152 (Rich^d
Schmidt) 2/3rds down ship list page 4 of 11; ISTG page _02 begins at
passenger 153 (Friedr Meyer) and ends at passenger #303 (Ch Schmid) 1/3rd
down ship list page 8 of 11; ISTG page _03 begins at passenger #304 (David
Buechle) and ends with #455.
There is no sworn statement at the beginning of this list, nor a
recapitulation at the end; therefore it is possible that this manifest is
incomplete. It has been transcribed according to what was filmed.

There is a very nice presentation of the S.S. Cimbria on "The Palmer
List of Merchant Vessels" (1 Apr 2005) including a photograph and a painting
of the ship, plus a history of the ship and of its sinking in January 1883.
