Where not indicated the passenger is shown as single. I've marked the odd single/married person as their age might indicate otherwise Correspondence: Passenger #238 - Newton My grandmother was Priscilla Newton, aged 2 on the Roxburgshire's passenger list. Gt. grandfather Thomas was an agricultural labourer in and around Yarm, in North Yorkshire, then moved to Durham and worked as a coalminer. I can imagine the family wanting a better life, especially as conditions where so hard as the Industrial Revolution got going. They left behind Martha's adult son and took with them her sister's son Christopher Richardson Newton. His mother had died and he left 3 younger siblings behind, who were in a workhouse in 1881. Very sad isn't it, and we don't know what happened to them or others left behind. The family settled in Queensland and Thomas got work on a sheep station to begin with, later working for the railway as a labourer, and later still taking up a selection (block of land) but that didn't work out. Their eldest daughter, Mary Ann, died 6 months after they arrived, from typhoid. The mother, Martha, gave birth to two sons, each named Thomas, both of whom died shortly after birth. Martha died after giving birth to the last one, her 15th child!! The 4 remaining daughters survived to grow up and marry. Elizabeth and Martha Jane and their hushands were real pioneers of outback Queensland, helping break in the country and clear it, whilst rearing large families. Martha's husband, Patrick McGuirk was a horse breaker. Elizabeth's husband, Robert Dalglish, worked on a station and Elizabeth ran a Cobb & Co. Coaching station and horse change stopover in the middle of nowhere. Isabella married Henry (Harry) Sherrif (was Shariffe) who had a Pole Angus Stud, they had one adopted son who never married. My grandmother, Priscilla, emigrated to New Zealand at age 18 as a domestic servant, where she eventually met and married my grandfather, Richard Lydford. Their cousin Christopher went his own way and was a horse breaker, drover, and generally laboured in the outback doing all kinds of work, even gold hunting. He married Bridget Kelly and their many descendants also are in Queensland. Thomas went to live with Isabella and husband on their farm and in 1899 accidentally shot himself, dying instantly, just over 60 years of age.
