Transcriber's Notes:
There is no Captain's Statement with this manifest, so one cannot be certain that
the ship is complete. In addition, the original lister did not number the passengers,
nor did he provide a recapitulation at the end of the manifest. This ship left
Hamburg on October 2 and arrived in New York November 22.
A question mark (?) is used for letter/letters that cannot be read because of the
quality of the document. Where possible a suggestion is given in the Transcriber's
Notes of what this letter/letters may be.
An asterisk (*) is used to refer to an item in the transcriber's notes, which
further explains the entry.
A circumflex (^) is used to indicate missing letters in a name. The original lister
showed this by writing the final letter smaller and raising it above the line.
The lister also used the "leading s", which appears at first glance to be an "f"
before the letter "s" when actually it signifies a double "s". The transcriber
has changed this where found.
11 This passenger is listed as a Male, but has a distinctly feminine name.
15 This passenger is listed as a Female, but has a distinctly masculine name. Could
the name be Johane Hacker?
19 This 4-year old is listed as a Farmer, although at times the original lister did
not list an occupation for older persons. Could it be that he has the age incorrect,
or was there another Heinr Kasdorf who was an adult?
23 One would assume that "Wilh" is an abbreviation for Wilhelm, but since this person
is listed as a Female, the name perhaps should be "Wilhe" - Wilhelmine.
24 This 5-year old is listed as a Farmer. Is the age incorrect and he is the father
of the following passenger?
35-37 Surname: Plogke, Plozke. #36, a farmer is listed as 6 years old. Could the
age be wrong, or is a passenger missing, the father in the family? The 8-month old
child is listed as a Female, but has a masculine name.
38-41 This is a very unusual surname. A double "k" is clearly seen, (Scukknet) but
one questions whether it should be a "hk" combination. Schuhknet? or even
Schuhknect?
44-49 The first name in this list is on one page and the remainder are on another
page. Is this a family named Horley or Holey?
49 Either the sex is listed incorrectly, or the name should be Johanne.
61 This passenger, with a feminine name is recorded as being a male.
69 Given name: Ottolie is usually a feminine name, so the sex may be listed
incorrectly.
74 Surname: Knick, Kouck.
84-90 It is assumed that these people all belong to the same family. The spelling
change is made from one name to the other with no explanation.
97-99 Surname: Raehm, Rachm.
105 Is the given name Wilhelmine, or is this a boy, named Wilhelm?
126-130 Surname: Hagunord, Hagernord.
153-156 This surname is obscured by a black mark on the page. The fifth letter appears
to be "m" or "n" and name may end in "hl" or "kl". There are not a lot of names
with the Schmm-- combination. Could the name be Schmehl? Schmekl?
156 & 157 It is not clear if the lister made a mistake at this point. Passenger #156
carries a notation in the last column "Died on the voyage"; however, Passenger
#157 has no age listed and in that space is written the word "died". Most likely
it is Passenger #157, Johne Reichter who has died and the lister accidentally
recorded it in the wrong column for #156.
160 Surname: Kuss, Kless.
173 Surname: Beith, Buth
Correspondence added, Passengers 1-9 THOUR/MEWIS
John/Johann and Marie Thour left the port of Hamburg with their children: Minna, 32;
John, 18; Fritz/Fred, 16; and Sophia. Traveling with them was their daughter Carie/
Caroline Mewis, 24; her husband John Mewis, 38; and children Marie, 16; Carolina, 7;
and Fredrika, 7. The manifest from the ship's arrival in New York has most of
the same people; however, some of the names and ages are scrambled. This information
has been put together from Hamburg and NY manifests as well as information from other
family sources. The family settled in Wisconsin and changed their names. Thour
became Thur and Mewis became Maves. Sharon Cress
