Ship Karnak


Nassau, Bahamas to New York
31 August 1859

DISTRICT OF NEW YORK - PORT OF NEW YORK
I, A Brownless Master of the Ship Karnak do solemnly, sincerely and truly swear that the following List or Manifest,subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of Customs of the Collection District of New York, is a full and perfect list of all the passengers taken on board of the said Ship at Nassau from which port said Ship has now arrived; and that on said list is truly designated the age, the sex and the occupation of each of said passengers, the part of the vessel occupied by each during the passage, the country to which each belongs, and also the country of which it is intended by each to become an inhabitant; and that said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of said passengers who have died on said voyage, and the names and ages of those who died.

Columns represent: Name, Age, Sex, Occupation, The country to which they severally belong, The country to which they intend to become inhabitants, Died on the Voyage, and Space Occupied. No deaths were recorded on the voyage; the Space Occupied for all passengers was recorded as "Cabin"; these columns have been omitted from the transcription.

?  The use of a ? indicates a word or letters that could not be read due to quality of 
   the original document.

The transcription preserves the original spelling.

Passenger numbers have been added to aid with referencing.

All ditto marks on the original manifest have been replaced with the actual words 
indicated.

The manifest scribe used a Germanic letter resembling 'fs'; to aid in reading, these have been
transcribed to 'ss'.

* The manifest scribe did not identify the country of citizenship.

6 Research indicates that this passenger served as Governor of the Bahamas from 1857-1864.
  His name is spelled variously as Charles John Bayley.
