Transcriber's Notes:
* An asterisk indicates an error on the part of the original recorder not the transcriber,
or is used to call attention to additional information in the transcriber notes.
Question marks replace illegible information or letters.
The Sworn Statement os dated Mar 30 but Mar 29 is in a note above and on the cover sheet.
The pages on this film are not numbered so finding a particular ship can be difficult.
However, there is a system of numbering the manifests that is a part of the National
Archives file system on Chinese persons. These numbers are included in the identification
of the film and reel numbers below.
For passengers bound for San Francisco, passengers' names and ages are followed by a stamp
that varies depending on the disposition of the passenger.
Passengers allowed to land have the following stamp:
Landed Collectors order (blank with a month and day date written in) 1896 by Insp's (blank
for a name, in this case O'Leary).
Passengers not allowed to land have one of two different stamps:
Landing Refused Habeas Corpus U.S.D.C. Case followed by a number. These passengers were
probably allowed to land, but not to freely enter the country. The National Archives
should have a file for these passengers describing what happened to them.
Landing Refused Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date).
For passengers bound for a further port there are two possible dispositions:
Landed "I.T." Transit List followed by a number
Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date)
Occupation of all passengers is Grocer except as noted below
The following columns had no entries:
Last Place or Residence
Height
Complexion
Color of Eyes
Physical Marks or Peculiarities and Facts of Identification
Torreon is in central Mexico. Demerara is in Guyana.
An Affidavit Merchant is a document created by the passenger before departing the US. It
is an affidavit signed by a number of white men in the town where the passenger resided
in the US to prove that he is/was a merchant. A Sec 6 Certificate is a document to prove
that the passenger is/was a merchant but created by the Chinese government in China.
There are a number of passengers listed as Return Laborer. When the Chinese Exclusion Act
was passed in 1882 a number of Chinese who had spent time in the US but had returned to
China at the time of the Act were excluded from returning to the US until 1894 when the act
was amended.
There a a number of passengers with u or U as a name. It is difficult to tell whether it is
upper case or lower case. It usually has a diacritical mark above it that could be a caret,
a tilde or even an acute accent.
According to the National Archives branch in San Bruno, California it is possible that they
have some information on any Chinese passenger who arrived in San Francisco after 1886.

74,91 Second name is Tsan or Tsau.
87 "Landed by Collector April 8/98, stature is illegible.
95 "Landed by Collector April 14/98, Native US."
96-98 There is a note for these passengers " Returned from New Orleans on account of blockade.
Application to land as Natives of US denied by the Collector. writs USDC 11434, 11435,

100 Returned from New Orleans Landed by Collector May 7/98.
95-100 These passengers in transit to Havana were not allowed to go by sea from New Orleans
probably because of a blockade in place as a result of the Spanish American War.
