Transcriber's Notes:
A question mark (?) is used for letter/letters that cannot be read because of the
quality of the document. Where possible a suggestion is given in the Transcriber's
Notes of what this letter/letters may be.
An asterisk (*) is used to refer to an item in the transcriber's notes, which
further explains the entry.
A circumflex (^) is used to indicate missing letters in a name. The original lister
showed this by writing the final letter smaller and raising it above the line.
The columns, "Allegiance" and "Remarks" were eliminated from this transcription as
there was no information recorded in these columns. The Column, "Place of
Settlement" records (for most passengers) "Maryland", but this is crossed out and
the word "Germany" is written above. Since it is believed that the Lister has
made an error in this column, the Transcriber has chosen to list the Place of
Settlement as "Maryland". However, it is not realistic to believe that all of
these persons were going to settle in Maryland any more is it realistic to
believe that all of these persons were Farmers and that they came from Germany.
The Lister merely put dittoes down all of the columns, except that of Age and the
Names, with only one exception (Passenger #178, who was born in Ireland, but
owed allegiance to Great Britain, and intended to settle in France).
Passengers #166-178 are written in a different handwriting. It seems that
#166-175 are babies to some of the other passengers. Why they are listed
separately is not known; however, the spelling of the names differs somewhat.
Generally, the handwriting on this list is very poor. It may be that of the
captain, judging from the signature. He tends to just put a squiggle at the end
of the given name.
5 Theuser, Theurer.
10-14 These few names seem to be a duplicate of #17-21, even though the spelling
is different. The given name for #13 is difficult to distinguish in
both instances. It is a short name, possibly an abbreviation. The first
letter could be the peculiar way the lister writes a capital "E". The last
letter is a loop that goes below the line - Eliz?
17-21 It appears that this may be a repeat of passengers #10-14, although the
surname is spelled differently. Regarding #20, see notation of #10-14.
38-42 The first surname is written one one page and the others on another page.
The first does not have the final "t".
43 The name may be Rotty, or even Rolly. The lister does not cross his "t's".
46 There is an "x" next to this passenger's surname on the list. It is not
clear what this signifies.
81 Given name - possibly Eliz.
82 It appears that there is a ditto, making the first name possibly Eliz.
88 Surname: Huffler, Hufflen.
105 Surname: Brus, Bries
157 No given name is recorded for this passenger.
164 & 165 Surname: Ziegler, Zugler
166 Surname: Grosland, Grotland.
166-175 These passengers appear to be children of other passengers, who were
not previously listed, perhaps because the lister felt that children this
young need not be listed separately from their parents. The handwriting
is different from that of the first lister, so these were probably added
later. The spelling of the surnames differs considerably from that of
the parents.
177 All of the missing letters are on the line, neither going above nor below
the line. Letters are such as "c", "i", "u", "n", but it is impossible
to read it.
178 This passenger was born in Ireland, owes allegiance to Great Britain,
and intends to settle in France.
179 No age or country of origin is listed for this passenger. It appears his
name was added at the last minute. Handwriting is that of the original
recorder.
180 This passenger was added to the list without age or country of birth. It
appears that he may have the surname of Kaufmann, as passengers #146-151.
The second letter looks like a "u", but perhaps the writer just did not
close it to make it an "a". Handwriting is that of the original recorder.
Perhaps it is the circumstance of this passenger being a small infant,
as #166-175.
