Transcriber's Notes:
* is for error by the original recorder or to note other information on the copy added to
the transcriber's notes.
? Transcriber unable to read due to the quality of the copy, letters are too small, written
over or elaborate writing.
This Manifest indicates the ship left Genova on 2 April, Naples on 3 April, and Palermo on 4
April. This page has Naples 3 Apr 1913 stamped in the header. The number 51 is stamped on the
top and bottom of the given name column and the number 202 is written on the top left of the
page. This copy is poorer than most, much of the writing is too light, the letters are written
close together and the script is small. It is very difficult to read.
Recorders often used ditto marks for Nationality, Race and last address columns from 1023,
and for most Gender, Marital Status, Occupations, from 1031 down unless other wise stated.
Address of passenger and nearest relative have ditto marks from 1028 down. This transcriber
has replaced all ditto marks with the information referred to. The last residences of these
passengers and their relatives seem to be from the same town, but the writing is not clear on
any of them. Some look like Erna del Colle, while the first word of others looks like Ecosa,
Ecora, Eraca, or as two words Erasi Selcolle. Nothing similar was found in the atlas. This
recorder wrote the gender as M for masculine, or f for feminine, and marital status as M for
married and S for single. Transcriber has typed these as they are seen on the manuscript. The
cities given as last residences may be a small section of the larger city or a town outside
it, most were not found in the Atlas. Only given name of the wife is given in the nearest
relative column, no maiden name was written, as usually done. Script by recorder is usually,
but not always clear, as with letters like n and u, e, a, and o, and others.
Passenger 1027 is lined out, all columns are blank of all data, from Surname to Final
Destination. Passengers 1028 and 1048 are lined out. This usually means that the passenger
was not on this ship. They do not have a check before their surnames, between age and gender,
or Final Destination as all other passengers. The nearest relative information is often
visible either below, above, or through these lines. Below the given names on the first page
is written The number of passengers making this trip were written below the last residence
columns. Of 30 passengers written on these pages, 27 made this passage.
The Italian language has no letter j, k, or w, x, or y. The letter h is only used with ch or
gh.
The passenger listing above is only one page of this manifest. Both may be seen on the Ellis
Island Web Site.

1023 Carfagua, before the printed line number is another hand written one, 58, the only number
before any line numbers on this page. There are what look like X marks before each of the
first three line numbers. Above the top X, SI is written. Both of these at the far left,
before or in the name column usually means the passenger was temporarily detained. SI
means perhaps they were slated to be deported. Surname maybe Carfagna and since she is a
housewife, is most likely her maiden name, as was the custom of Italian women to use in
that era. Given name is written small and close together, but maybe Vencenza. Brackets are
between of the surname and given name, given name and age, and last residence and nearest
relative columns that connects 1023 to and 1025. Age looks like 29, but maybe 24, numbers
of recorder are not written clearly. Last address is difficult to read, maybe Iblis or
Iflis, only one similar found is Iesi. 1023 and 1025 have ditto marks for Last Address.
Nearest relative is written none, on line for 1024. State of destination was written over
to clarify it, can not read the lighter letters underneath.
1024 I???o, there are what look like X marks before each of the first three line numbers.
Above the top X, SI is written. Both of these at the far left, before or in the name
column usually means the passenger was temporarily detained. SI means perhaps they were
slated to be deported. Surname maybe Carfagna. Given name is written small and close
together, but maybe Vencenza. Brackets are between the surname and given name, given name
and age, and last residence and nearest relative columns that connects 1023 to and 1025.
Surname is difficult to read. The writing is small, close together and written over in
darker ink as if to correct it. Underneath maybe daughter, but above looks like Ie?so or
Te?so. Brackets are between surname and given name, given name and age, and last
residence and nearest relative columns that connects 1023 to and 1025. Occupation columns
has none written in it. Numbers are written from occupation to able to read or write
columns, 2 a dash, 940173 a dash, then like a date 12, a dash 8, a dash, 41. These
numbers are a verification for naturalization purposes, usually done after 1926. The
first number is a naturalization district number, the second set is either an application
number or the Certificate of Arrival number. The last set of numbers maybe the date the
person applied. Last address is difficult to read, maybe Iblis or Iflis, only one similar
found is Iesi. This Passenger and 1025 have ditto marks for Last Address. Nearest
relative is written none, on the line for this passenger. State of destination was
written over to clarify it, can not read the lighters letters underneath.
1025 I???o, there are what look like X marks before each of the first three line numbers.
Surname has ditto marks from 1024. Gender to able to read columns are blank, normally
done with very young children. Numbers are written from occupation to able to read or
write columns, 2 a dash, 420046 a dash, then below that what looks like an underlined 4
or a u, and like a date 3, a diagonal dash 10, a diagonal dash, and 36. The dash between
the 3 and 10 is connected to the top of the one between the 10 and 36, upward like the
tip of an arrow. These numbers are a verification for naturalization purposes, usually
done after 1926. The first number is a naturalization district number, the second set is
either an application number or the Certificate of Arrival number. The last set of
numbers maybe the date the person applied. This Passenger and 1024 have ditto marks for
Last Address. Nearest relative is written none, on line for 1024. State of destination of
destination was written over to clarify it, can not read the lighter letters underneath.
1026 Mi?o, surname maybe Minto or Minsto. Age looks like 19, but maybe 14, numbers of this
recorder are not written clearly. Marital Status column has dittos frpm previous
passenger, so probably is single. Able to read and write has ditto marks from previous
passengers. 1024 looks to have no in that column, one before has yes. Usually, if the
answer for a passenger is different, it is written in the column, so it looks like
passenger was not able to read or write, but transcriber is not sure. Final Destination
city looks like one word, most similar one found is Southington.
1027 Line is blank and crossed out by a thick line.
1028 ?a?s?? passenger is crossed out by a thick line. This usually means that the passenger
was not on this ship. All information is mostly under the line and difficult to make out,
except for what is shown above. Surname may begin Nan, Van, Nass. or Vass, rest is
blocked by line. Given name maybe Maria, all but first letter is blocked. Age is also
blocked, but maybe 21. Occupation looks like farm wife, but in the first word, only the
first letter is clear. Able to read is definitely yes. Last address of passenger and
Nearest relatives are blocked and not readable, but the passengers below seem to be from
the same town, but the writing is not clear on any of them. Some look like Erna del
Colle, others first word looks like Ecosa, Ecora, Eraca or as two words Erasi Selcolle.
Name of nearest relative is written above the cross out line, but is still not clear,
looks like Frlillo. Nothing similar found, only close to it are Achille and Cirillo.
State and city of destination are not clear. State maybe NJ or NY, city looks to begin
with K or V, like Kingson or Vingson. Only similar one found is Kingston, in both NJ and
NY.
1029 ?onatone, an X is written at the far left, before or in the name column, usually means
the passenger was temporarily detained. Surname looks like Ponatone by recorder, but a D
was written before it by another hand. Occupation was written by another hand. It looks
like Don or Dovr, but maybe Dom for domestic, lines of the letters in occupation above go
over the letter in question. Name of father looks like Ronatoni, but first letter is
similar to the one in the surname of passenger. Only similar names found are Diodato or
Renato. Last residence of passenger has ditto marks from 1028, and residence of relative
was not written clearly, see general notes above.
1030 Ludovico, an X is written at the far left, before or in the name column, usually means
the passenger was temporarily detained. Last residence of passenger has ditto marks from
1028, and residence of relative was not written clearly, see general notes above. Final
destination has ditto marks from 1029.
1031 Paradiso, last residence of passenger has ditto marks from 1028, and residence of
relative was not written clearly, see general notes above. Though there is no indication
showing a relationship between 1031 and 1032, such as brackets or words written, the
surnames, given name of each father, and town of origin and destination is the same and
they may be related, or may not be. Final destination has ditto marks from 1029.
1032 Paradiso, last residence of passenger has ditto marks from 1028, and residence of
relative was not written clearly, see general notes above. Though there is no indication
showing a relationship between 1031 and 1032, such as brackets or words written, the
surnames, given name of each father, and town of origin and destination is the same and
they may be related, or may not be. Final destination has ditto marks from 1029.
1033 Pro?a, surname is not clear, maybe Prosa or Prova. Given name looks like Olanio but maybe
or Otanio, no similar name found. Letters from passenger above blocks a clear reading of
the letter. Last residence of passenger has ditto marks from 1028, and residence of
relative was not written clearly, see general notes above. Final destination has ditto
marks from 1029.
1034 Ca?detta, surname looks like Cardetta but maybe Cardetta, or Casdetta, writing of
recorder hard to make out. Given name looks as shown above, but nothing similar was
found. Age is most likely 40, but looks like Lo. Last residence of passenger has ditto
marks from 1028, and residence of relative was not written clearly, see general notes
above. Destination looks like Comron or Cornson. Only similar one found in Conn. is
Courverse. However, the way the town is written, it looks to end with the letters on,
not se.
1035 Milano, last residence of passenger has ditto marks from 1028, and relative has ditto
marks from 1034. None were written clearly, see general notes above. Given name of wife
middle letters are not clear, it looks like Camlla or Carnlla, no such names were found.
But maybe the recorder rushed and misspelled Carmella. Destination is boldly written
over, from Pa to NY, but city underneath is blocked by Rochester. Can only read the first
letters Ca, rest look like only 3 letters.
1036 Lippolio, age writing looks more like Lo or ho than 40 in writing by recorder. Last
residence of passenger has ditto marks from 1028, and of relative has ditto marks from
1034. None were written clearly, see general notes above.
1037 Colacicco, last residence of passenger has ditto marks from 1028, and of relative has
ditto marks from 1034. None were written clearly, see general notes above. Given name of
wife, letters are small and close together, maybe Caterina, though the t is not crossed.
It looks like Casenia no such name was found. Destination, state and city are not clear
recorder wrote NJ and NY similarly. City looks like it may be Ringston or Kingstin. It is
written over, slightly above it, but can not make out what it says. Both NJ and NY have a
town Kingston, neither has Ringston.
1038 Vemnre, surname was written right over that of the recorder by another hand in darker
ink, to clarify it. Writing beneath can not be read, but what is visible, is clear. Age
looks more like 2y or 2 and a very fancy 9. Last residence of passenger has ditto marks
from 1028, and of relative has ditto marks from 1034. None were written clearly, see
general notes above. Given name of wife, writing of recorder is small and letters are
close together, making it difficult to read. Name looks like Mananna, but no such name is
found, only similar one is Marianna. Destination has ditto marks from 1037.
1039 Spada, last residence of passenger has ditto marks from 1028, and of relative has ditto
marks from 1034.
1040 Basile, surname was written over in darker ink by another hand, to clarify it, but what is
visible beneath seems clear enough. Marital status looks like an l, but that it was
written at all suggests that passenger was single, since all others before had ditto
marks from 1033 who was married. Given name of mother looks like Meota, but no such name
is found. Only name similar is Marta. Last residence of passenger has ditto marks from
1028, and of relative has ditto marks from 1034. None were written clearly, see general
notes above. Destination has ditto marks from 1039.
1041 Orfino, surname was written right over that of the recorder by another hand in darker
ink, to clarify it. Marital status has ditto marks from 1040. Last residence of passenger
has ditto marks from 1028 and of relative has ditto marks from 1034. None were written
clearly, see general notes above.
1042 Milouro, surname is not clear, maybe Milano. Last residence of passenger has ditto marks
from 1028, and of relative has ditto marks from 1034. None were written clearly, see
general notes above. Given name of wife is not clear, nothing similar was found,
transcriber will not guess what it is. Destination city was boldly written over by
another hand to NYC. Word below is hard to read, but looks to begin with Y, and may be
Yonkers.
1043 Masi, surname letters are not clear, maybe Mari. Given name looks like Vitantonio and
maybe a nickname, no such name, nor anything similar was found. It maybe a misspelling by
recorder of Valentino, though it ends with antonio. Last residence of passenger has ditto
marks from 1028, and of relative has ditto marks from 1034. None were written clearly,
see general notes above.
1044 S?e??na, surname was written right over that of the recorder by another hand in darker
ink, to clarify it, but it is not. There is a space between the first set of ?? letters,
as if the ink skipped. The name underneath by the recorder is hard to make out, and may
be Sranna. Not all letters are visible. The darker writing above looks like S with a
letter that is written slightly above the rest, next is the ink skip, then an e, the next
letter is not legible, then it ends in na, like given on the list. Last residence of
passenger has ditto marks from 1028, and of relative has ditto marks from 1034. None were
written clearly, see general notes above.
1045 Parlia, surname letters are not clear, maybe Parla, Parba or Barba. Last residence of
passenger has ditto marks from 1028, and of relative has ditto marks from 1034. None
were written clearly, see general notes above. Given name of wife looks like Aiora or
Aiosa, no such name found, but it maybe Rosa or Dora.
1046 Copozzi, surname was written right over that of the recorder by another hand To clarify
it, in darker ink. Surname beneath looks similar to 1047, which is quite clear by
recorder. Brackets are between surnames and given names, look like they connect 1046,
1047 and 1048. But what looks like the word Bro or brother is written on the diagonal
only from 1048 up to 1047. Age looks more like 2j or 2y than 29. Last residence of
passenger has ditto marks from 1028, and of relative has ditto marks from 1034. None were
written clearly, see general notes above. Destination has ditto marks from 1045.
1047 Capozzi, brackets are between surnames and given names, look like they connect 1046, 1047
and 1048. But what looks like the word Bro or brother is written on the diagonal only
from 1048 up to 1047. Last residence of passenger has ditto marks from 1028, and of
relative has ditto marks from 1034. None were written clearly, see general notes above.
Destination has ditto marks from 1045.
1048 ?atti, passenger is crossed out by tow line. This usually means that the passenger was
not on this ship. Surname is partially blocked by line, maybe Eatti or Giatti. Brackets
are between surnames and given names, look like they connect 1046, 1047 and 1048. But
what looks like the word Bro or brother is written on the diagonal only from 1048 up to
1047. Age is covered by the lines, and maybe 19 or 29, but looks more like 2j. Last
residence of passenger has ditto marks from 1028, and of relative has ditto marks from
1034. None were written clearly, see general notes above. Given name of wife, letters are
small and close together, but are above the line. It looks like it maybe Lucrezia.
Destination has ditto marks from 1045.
1049 G?a?di, letters of surname are not clear, maybe Girardi, Gisardi, or Griasdi. Numbers are
written in surname column, 298831 and like a date 7, a diagonal dash 22, a diagonal dash
and what looks like it maybe 27. Below it looks like a small circle around an initial,
which this transcriber can not make out. These may relate to a record check, usually in
response to an inquiry by the immigrant himself, or to insure reentry to the US, meaning
the trip out of the US and back was previously planned. The passenger would request a
letter from the Immigration Service, prior to traveling. By 1924, Reentry Permits were
required for any alien to travel abroad, but this did not assure them of readmitance.
Before 1924, an alien traveler would request a letter or a pass from the Port
Commissioner to document his or her previous admission for permanent residence to
guarantee reentry. A practice developed, especially at Ellis Island to issue aliens a
letter, it was not an assurance of return, but greatly helped them with their travel. If
these numbers were in the Occupation column, it was for naturalization purposes. Marital
Status looks more like an L than an S, but is not an M. Occupation is written more boldly
than other writing, perhaps to correct it or to change it from farm lab to lab or
laborer. Last residence of passenger has ditto marks from 1028, and of relative has ditto
marks from 1034. None of those before were written clearly, see general notes above.
Given name of wife looks like it maybe Lucia. Destination, State maybe NY or NJ, as
recorder wrote these letters similarly. City looks like Wallafalls, only similar town
found is Wallkill, NY.
1050 Lont??, letters of surname are not clear and last letter looks like it was written over
several times. Surname maybe Lontva or Lontoa. Given name looks like Vitantonio, which
maybe a nickname, as no such name was found. Last residence of passenger has ditto marks
from 1028, and of relative has ditto marks from 1034. None were written clearly, see
general notes above. Destination city was written over, from what looks like Yonkers to
NYC by another hand.
1051 Belgiomo, marital status looks like it was scratched out, but most likely is S for
single, as the passengers just before and just after have M for married written, usually
done when the information changes from one passenger to the next. Last residence of
passenger has ditto marks from 1028, and of relative has ditto marks from 1034. None were
written clearly, see general notes above.
1052 Mani?i, stamped over the number line is the word deported. Underneath it is written SI,
meaning this passenger was held for Special Inquiry. Surname last letters are not clear
and the last two are written over as ni by a different hand. It maybe Mancini or
Manicani. The second given name was written in also by a different hand. Age is scratched
out and written over several times in bold ink. It is hard to read, and looks like V6,
but a small 2 is written close to and slightly above it in the given name column. The
darker numbers look like 26, but maybe 16. Last residence of passenger has ditto marks
from 1028, and of relative has ditto marks from 1034. None were written clearly, see
general notes above. The first letters of the Destination city are hard to read and look
like Shen Falls or Lhen Falls. But since the letter Y in York from the previous passenger
is directly above the unclear letter, it maybe the only similar one found, Seneca Falls.
