Correspondence 06/16/2005 passengers #9-15 and #24 Lewis, Williams
I thought you might be interested in hearing a story about some of our family who
were passengers on the William F. Storer. My husband's G.G.Grandmother, her 6
daughters and her sister were on that ship from Liverpool to New York which arrived
in NY on Oct 4, 1859.
She had been widowed a few months before and left with 9 children. They lived in
Aberdare, S. Wales. Since she had family that had already come to America, she decided
to join them with help from a brother who was already here. He lived in a small
community in northern PA called Neath. The passenger list shows: Mary Lewis,
age 40 traveling with her sister, Hannah Williams, age 30 and 6 daughters-----Janet
( aka Jenette) age 19, Louisa (Lucy) and Rachael, 17 year old twins, Mary, age 14,
Elizabeth, age 8, and Matilda, age 2.

They were "put up" in a log cabin and the older girls were hired out as housekeepers,
etc. One day, the neighbors realized that there had been no smoke coming from the
cabin chimney, and they fround the mother dead and the youngest girl all alone.
That girl was my husband's G.Grandmother. That part of PA looks a great deal like
much of Wales and is still very Welsh. My husband's grandfather came there from
northern Wales and was a minister in Neath in the late 1800s.

Some of us have tried to find out exactly when this family came to America and on
which ship, so I was elated to find them on the passenger list. Another family
mystery solved. Audra J. Squires (Mrs. Paul).
