Transcriber's Notes:
Lister listed the given name first and then the last name. Transcriber has listed the last name
first and then the given name for ease in reading.
The numbering system is not that of the original lister. He began listing the Steerage passengers
at number one and started again with number one at the beginning of the First Cabin Passengers and
then again at number one at the beginning of the Second Cabin Passengers. Transcriber continued
the numbers consecutively through to the end. Passengers 1-136 are steerage passengers, 137-163 are
first cabin passengers and 164-203 are second cabin passengers.
A ? is used to indicate letter or letters that are unreadable due to the condition of the document
or the handwriting of the lister. Every effort is made to list alternative suggestions when feasible.
*The column, Port of Embarkation was eliminated, since all passengers boarded ship in Hamburg. Also
eliminated was the column "Date and Cause of Death", since only one passenger succumbed (#37) and
this is noted in the transcriber's notes. The column, The Country of Which They are Citizens is
designated on the form as pertaining to cabin passengers only and thus is not recorded for the
steerage passengers. However, it is further noted on the manifest form that the columns Read/Write,
Native Country, Last Residence, State Citizens of the U.S.A., Intended Destination-State or
Territory are required for Immigrants or Passengers other than Cabin only. The lister, did however,
continue to record this information for the cabin passengers.
Occupations were abbreviated by the transcriber. Labourer=lab, maid servant=md.ser, merchant=
mercht, as well as other abbreviations which are noted in the transcriber's notes.
The column regarding the ability to read and write is listed as "y" (for yes to both), "n" (as no
to both) or "-" for children too young to read in this list. The lister spelled both Yes and No
completely; transcriber did not due to space constraints. This information was not recorded for
cabin passengers, as it was not required.
The word "citizen" was abbreviated by the transcriber to "Cit", where it is applicable.
The column Native Country has the following abbreviations: Mecklen (Mecklenburg), Wurtem
(Wurttemberg) Branden (Brandenburg)
In the column Transient, In Transit or Intending Protracted Sojourn, the lister used the
abbreviations T or PS and transcriber followed this pattern.
In the column "Location of Compartment, etc., lister abbreviated "forward" as "ford"; transcriber
used "fwd" due to space constraints. The lister listed cabin passengers as "cabin stateroom";
transcriber shortened this to "stateroom". For those in steerage, the lister had written "M.D."
above the compartment location. Perhaps this means "mid-deck"???
11-15 The intention of these passengers as to a protracted sojourn in the United States
is not possible to determine. The page apparently is ripped at this place. For #11,Place going
to: Could this be Great Neck, NY?
27 Surname: umlaut "u"
37 At the bottom of the list is the note that Carl Merten, 7m died September 18, 1893 of diarrhoea
infantum.
38-40, 82-84 These passengers are crossed out. There is no indication of location aboard ship,
or baggage carried. It is presumed that these people did not make the voyage.
44 Occupation: hairdresser
53 Occupation: carpenter
62 Occupation: locksmith
87 Surname: umlaut "o"
88 & 95 Occupation: locksmith
89 Given name: The final "a" is written above. It is presumed that this name is Johanna.
95 and 96 Last Residence: Wulfershausen
97 Surname: umlaut "o"
100 Surname: Kantz, Kautz
106 Surname: umlaut "a"
110 Last Residence: Herstedvester
123 Occupation: shoemaker
129 Surname: umlaut "o". This passenger's name is crossed out. Since there is no on-board
location indicated, or luggage brought on board, it is presumed that this passenger did not
make the voyage.
133 There is no age recorded for this passenger; however, there is a dash drawn. Perhaps
this was a newborn child, too young to even designate in months?
134 Last residence: Perhaps Bosarp?
135 Surname: umlaut "o".
153 Occupation: clergyman
159 Given name: probably an abbreviation of Josefine
160 Surname: umlaut "o"
172 He is not noted as a citizen, but one wonders if this is an oversight? Occupaton: Scholar
175 Given name: probably an abbreviation of Margaretta.
183 This passenger's information is crossed out. He seems not to have made the voyage.
192 No occupation is recorded for this passenger, including the word "none"
196&197 Surname: Peutan, Pentan
203 Surname: umlaut "u"
