Transcriber's Notes:
An asterisk (*) is used to denote areas where the original lister made a mistake, or to
more completely explain something.
A ? is used where a letter/letters could not be read. Every effort is made to give alternate
suggestions, where possible.
The numbering system is that of the transcriber, not the original lister. He did not give
the manifest numbers. Regarding occupations, these were recorded in French and have been
translated by the transcriber.
perruqier, marchand. It is difficult to determine the differences between a farmer and a
cultivator, so these terms were translated as listed.
Also, the original lister ascribed all members of the family with the same occupation as
the head of the family; transcriber maintained this pattern.
When ages are recorded in fractions of years the formatter has changed these to months for
consistency with ISTG rules.
* The column, "Description of this person" has been eliminated as there was only one entry:
#3 and this was noted in the transcriber's notes.
1 Full given name is: Pierre Evariste Martin
3 In the last column, which is not listed here, the original lister has recorded
"naturalized American".
4 Full given name is: Jean Pierre Vincent
11 The given name is the feminine version; however, the sex is clearly listed as male.
22 Accent acute over "e" in surname.
23-27 The closest town in Bavaria to this name would be Guttenberg, but one wonders if it
could not possibly be Gothenburg (Goteborg in Swedish, w/soft "g" at the end). When
the word Sweden is said in the Swedish language, it is Sverige, which might
mistakenly sound like "Baviere" (Bavaria in French). The "Goet" is clearly seen
the middle letters not so well seen, but the "bure" is clearly written; lister even
wrote over it on one occasion with the same letters.
55 The occupation as described would indicate that he had something to do with the making
of metal and then cutting it decoratively.
56 Surname: Waechter, Waschter
58 There appears to be an acute accent over the final "e" in surname.
89 The full given name is Philippe Frederic
61&62 The given name may be Gochus, although it is not like other places where he has
written a capital "G".
89 Full given name is Philippe Frederic
94-96 Surname: Satler, Saller
102-109 This surnames could possibly be double: Spire-Focoles. The first name is
listed as Spire Focoles, Will^m and the dittoes for the remainder of the family
are clearly placed under the name Focoles. It is unknown what "Spire" signifies.
Therefore, the transcriber has listed this possibility.
107 The given name is Marguerite.
119 Given name seems to be clearly "Joseph", yet sex is listed as "female". Is this an
error in the sex, or is her name really Josephine?
130 Given name seems to be clearly "Frederic", yet sex is listed as "female". Is this an
error in the sex, or is her name really Frederica?
131 Accent acute over second "e" in surname.
144 Surname possibilities: Korce, Koru, Korie, Korn
Correspondence added 7-30-2005:
My ancestor, Pierre Flick, is listed on the Ship LA FORTUNE arrived in
NY May 18, 1832. He traveled with his entire family, also listed.
This family settled in Carrolltown, Cambria Co., PA. Son John built
a home in Carrolltown which is still standing, and was the birthplace
of Dr. Lawrence Flick, a pioneer in the study of tuberculosis.
In 1892, Dr. Lawrence Flick (1856-1938) of Philadelphia founded the
Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Tuberculosis, the first
society in the world to concentrate all of its efforts into the control
and cure of TB.
Dr. Flick's parents were John (Jean) Flick, b. 1813, listed on the ship
as son of Pierre (George) Flick. John married Elizabeth Sharbaugh b. 1822.
She lived in the neighboring house in Carrolltown, Pa. (This was the twin house,
and I believe both were built by John and his father.) Dr. Flick was the
9th of 11 children born to John and Elizabeth Flick. A photo and further
information on the work of Dr. Flick can be viewed offsite by clicking on the link.
Tributes were paid to the Flick family on the 100th anniversary of Dr. Flick's
birthday, as recorded in an unknown newspaper, Cambria County, PA.
The family is listed as being from Strasbourg, France, but their
home was Altenstadt, Wissembourg, Germany in the Alsace-Lorraine area.
Pierre Flick is my 3rd great grandfather, John Flick my 2nd great
grandfather. Dr. Lawrence is brother of my great grandmother.
