I, John Hedderwick, Master of the Steamship Iowa, do solemnly, sincerely, and truly swear that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of New York, is a full and perfect List of all the Passengers taken on board the said S.S. Iowa at Glasgow, from which Port the said Steamer has now arrived; and that on said List is truly designated the age, the sex, and the occupation of each of said passengers, the part of the vessel occupied by each during the passage, the country to which each belongs, and also the country of which it is intended by each to become an inhabitant; and that said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of said Passengers who have died on said Voyage and the names and ages of those who died.

Transcriber's Notes:

A question mark (?) indicates a letter or a number that cannot be transcribed
definitely.

An asterisk (*) indicates either difficulty in deciphering the handwriting of the
manifest or something in the Transcriber's Notes to which the reader should refer.

A caret (^) indicates that the following letter in a word or name is superscripted.

The transcriber numbers all the passengers consecutively 1 through 408, even
though the recorder of the original manifest numbered the 1st Cabin passengers 1
through 29, and the Steerage passengers 1 through 379.

The recorder of the manifest often abbreviates given names by writing the first few
letters of the name, then skipping letters and then writing the final letter as
superscripted. In these cases, the transcriber uses the symbol (^) to indicate that
the following letter is superscripted, i.e., And^w for Andrew, Tho^s for Thomas,
Mich^l for Michael, W^m for William, etc. For others he employs an abbreviated
version of their given name, such as "Chas" for Charles, "Hy" for Henry,
Michl for Michael, Jno for John, and Jas for James.

The recorder routinely substitutes "Mc" for "Mac" in the surnames of the Irish
passengers.

The entry "United States" in the native country and destination columns
is shortened to "U. States" for formatting reasons.

212 Surname is recorded as "McCormac", but might possibly be "McCormack".
223 Surname is recorded as "Gallacher", but might possibly be "Gallagher".
237 Surname is recorded as "Heeny", but might possibly be "Heany" or "Heeney".
246 Surname is recorded as "Millikin", but might possibly be "Milliken".
247 Surname is recorded as "Irwine", but might possibly be "Irvine" or "Irwin".
251 Surname is either "Speers" or "Spiers".
258 Surname is recorded as "Yate", but might possibly be "Yates" or "Tate".
264 Surname is recorded as "Malwee", but might possibly be "Malvey" or "Malvie".
304 Surname is either "Walls" or "Wales".
305 Surname is recorded as "Hagen", but might possibly be "Hagan".
328-329 The date of these passengers' previous arrival in the United States is
either 1830 or 1850.
344 Surname appears to be written as "Slamin" or "Slamen", but might be "Slaman".
353 Surname appears to be either "Gramer" or "Grainer".
357 Surname is recorded as "Hyndeman", but might possibly be "Hyndman".
401 There is a horizontal line drawn through this passenger's name and associated
information and a notation added that states "See Number 142" indicating that
the passenger had been included earlier on the manifest.
402-403 Passengers' Occupation is not recorded, but one can deduce from the title
"Rev^d" included with their names that these passengers are clergymen.
