To Captain McLachlan of the ship “Hope”
    25th May 1841

Dear Sir

It is with feelings of the deepest respect and
heartfelt gratitude that we the passengers
of the ship “Hope” bound from Liverpool to New York,
beg leave to return you our most sincere and
fervent thanks for your uniform Kindness and Humanity
to us on our long and tedious passage,
which would have been disagreeable in the extreme from
the severe weather we encountered, but
which Sir, your great Kindness and attention to our
wants, as far as they lay in your power on
all occasions obviated in a great degree.

But not only Sir for your kindness to ourselves is
our praise due, but also for the great
skill and seamanlike abilities you displayed under the
most trying circumstances, but more
particularly when the life of one of us was placed in
imminent peril by falling overboard, when
by your great exertions and presence of mind under
divine providence he was saved from a watery
grave.

And likewise our sincere thanks are due to your
officers for their kind attention to us
in all maters that related to our comfort.

And now Sir, that we are about to part, we wish you
every Happiness that this world can
bestow and that all your voyages through life may be
prosperous and when your earthly career is
ended, may your anchor be cast in the haven of eternal
bliss, is our sincere and fervent prayer.

Signed on behalf of the Passengers.
