Ship Helene
I, Frederick Volckmann do solemnly, sincerely, and truly swear that the following List or Manifest of Passengers, subscribed with my name, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs for the District of New York, contains, to the best of my knowledge and belief, a just and true account of all the Passengers received on board the Bremen Ship Helene whereof I am Master, from Bremen
Sworn to this 15 July 1850 So help me God, Fr Volckmann
Before me, (port authority signature unclear)
List or Manifest of all the Passengers taken on board the Bremen Ship Helene whereof Fr Volckmann is Master, from Bremen burthen 773 tons.
Columns represent passenger name, age, gender, and occupation. The column for destination has been omitted in this list because all passengers are listed as destined for the United States. The original list recorded only "Germany" as the place of origin for all passengers; however, (see Transcriber's Notes) I have added specific villages as found in the Smith monograph because of the value that this would have for researchers trying to connect their ancestral lines to a specific place in Germany.

Transcriber's Notes:
An asterisk indicates further information in the Passenger Notes.
A question mark indicates indecipherable material.
This list from the National Archives and Records Administration (Microfilm 237/768)
has been compared to a list found in a monograph which can be found in the Ostfriesen
Genealogical Society of America library at Forest Lake MN. The monograph titled "From
Bremen to America in 1850: Fourteen Rare Emigrant Ship Lists" by Clifford Neal Smith,
Monograph No. 22 in the German-American Genalogical Research Series (ISSN 0094-7806,
published by Westland Publications, McNeal, Arizona, 1987. In the preface to the
monograph, Mr. Smith states that the information comes from an . . . obscure weekly
newspaper from Rudolstadt, Thuringia (Germany)entitled the "Allgemeine Auswanderungs-
Zeitung", devoted to news about ship sailings ... The newspaper can be found in the
Beinecke Rare Book Collection of the Yale University Library.
Discrepancies between the NARA list and the monograph list are mentioned in
the Passenger Notes. I cannot explain why some names included in the monograph
are not on the NARA passenger list or why some on the NARA list are not on the
monograph list. The monograph states that the ship left Bremen on 29 May 1850.
The writer of this list often (but not always) omits the surname for passengers
that most likely are members of a family unit. After comparing the two lists, I
have added the family name for those instances where the NARA list omitted it.
Spelling of names (esp. given names) seems to be unusual. The writer usually
spells Wilhelm as Willhelm; Wilhelmine as Willhelmine; Ludwig as Ludewig, etc.
A large number of names have a small cross or plus sign before them. There
is no explanation for the meaning of this in this list.

Correspondence added November 10, 2005, passengers 102-103 Kroling (Krohling)
My great-grandparents, Louis and Christiane Krohling (Kroling) were
passengers 102 and 103 in your listing for the Ship Helene which docked
in New York harbor July 15, 1850. Louis was born in Muenden, Christiane
in Einbeck, Germany. Traveling with them was Christiane's brother,
Gottlieb Doebeling (Debeling), passenger #103. He returned to Germany
before 1866.
The Krohlings settled in Galena, Illinois, where they had 8 children:
Herman Louis b. 1854, Henry John b. 1856, Augusta b. 1858, Louisa b. 1860,
twins Johann and Kasper b 1863 and Sophia Wilmenia b. 1865. Three of the
children, Augusta and the twins Johann and Kasper died in infancy. Louis
and Christiane also lost two other children in infancy in Muenden prior
to immigrating.
Louis enlisted in the Union Army during the Civil War where he his
wounds resulted in his being disabled. Christiane died in January
1878 and Louis remarried a Maria Tiel, widow of Franz Tiel. This
couple immigrated from the port of Hamburg sometime in the late 1860s.
Louis died in September 1893 in Galena.
