I, K. von Oterendorf, Master of the North German S. S. Hansa, do
solemnly, sincerely, and truly swear that the following List or Manifest,
subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of
the Collection District of New York, is a full and perfect List of all the
Passengers taken on board the said Steamship at Bremen, from which Port the
said Steamship has now arrived; and that on said List is truly designated the
age, the sex, and the occupation of each of said passengers, the part of the
vessel occupied by each during the passage, the country to which each belongs,
and also the country of which it is intended by each to become an inhabitant;
and that said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of said Passengers
who have died on said Voyage and the names and ages of those who died.

A question mark (?) indicates a letter or a number that cannot be transcribed
definitely.
An asterisk (*) indicates either difficulty in deciphering the handwriting of the
manifest or something in the Transcriber's Notes to which the reader should refer.
A caret (^) indicates that the following letter in a word or name is superscripted.
* In the Captain's sworn statement at the top of the manifest, the name of the vessel
is incorrectly recorded as "Steamship Deutschland", another of the vessels operated
by the The North German Lloyd Line.
The recorder of the manifest sometimes abbreviates given names by writing the
first few letters of the name, then skipping letters and then writing the final
letter as superscripted. In these cases, the transcriber uses the symbol (^) to
indicate that the following letter is superscripted, i.e., Tho^s for Thomas,
Sam^l for Samuel, Barb^a for Barbara, etc.
The recorder did not always use ditto marks to indicate "same as above". Many
occupation entries are left blank and the reader is confronted with the problem of
interpreting the recorder's intended meaning. Occupations are only given in the
transcription if the recorder entered them. Since it was common for recorders not
to make an entry in the occupation column for female passengers or for children,
a possible though not a certain interpretation of the intended occupation where left
blank is that of the occupation of the last adult male entered above.
3 Passenger's middle name is recorded as "Tachez" or "Pachez". Surname is
possibly "v. Theinburg", "v. Thunburg" or "v. Thernburg".
18 Surname is possibly "Reidemeister", "Riedemeister" or "Rudemeister".
23-24 Surname appears to be either "Rubpausen" or "Rubpansen", with an umlaut
above the "u".
26-27 First one or two letters of surname are not carefully formed and cannot be
deciphered with certainty. Name is possibly "Usenzer" or "Ilsenzer".
29-31 Surname appears to be written as "Uollchenbaker", but might possibly be
"Mollchenbacher".
32 Surname is either "Krass" or "Kross".
36 First digit of passenger's Age is obscurred by damage to the manifest.
51 Surname appears to be written as "Haoblick", but might possibly be "Hasblick".
66-71 There appears to be an umlaut above the "u" in surname "Klutz".
72-73 Native country appears to be written as "Yburg", but might be "Iburg".
80 Passenger's Occupation is recorded as "Pointer", possibly intending "Painter".
97 There appears to be an umlaut above the "o" in surname "Groning".

118 Surname is either "Hovn" or "Horn". Passenger's Sex is recorded as "Female"
yet her Occupation is listed as "Blacksmitt" or Blacksmith, an exception to
the usual practice of not listing Occuptions of female passengers. Possibly
a recording error.

122 Surname is either "Taber" or "Faber".
124 Surname is possibly "Hagenzo", "Hagenze" or "Hagenzi".
125 Last few letters of Native Country are not carefully formed and cannot be
deciphered with certainty, but place name might possibly be "Uttmer" or "Uttmen".
127 There appears to be an umlaut above the "u" in surname "Vumburger".
128 Native Country is recorded as "Veuenkirchen", but might possibly be "Neuenkirchen".
135 Surname is recorded as "Volte", but might possibly be "Nolte".

If you find an ancestor on a ship on ISTG and would like to link to your email address or home page, please submit a short paragraph about the passenger, where settled, children, etc., with the name of the ship and date of arrival, and send to the transcriber at the bottom of the manifest or to the ISTG Production Coordinator.
