Indicates a letter or number which could not be determined due to the condition of the manifest or handwriting of the original recorder. ^ A ^ followed by a letter indicates that the letter was superscripted. * Names were transcribed as seen regardless of spelling. This manifest seemed to have a lot of rips and tears or ink blotches. Names, country of origin, etc. that could not be read are indicated by ..... The dots are used to distinguish from letters that could not be read, which are indicated with ? One dot does not stand for one letter.
