NOTE: Munchweiler should be spelled with u Umlaut. The father's name is
probably Willy Moses, not Willy Gurs, this seems to be an error in the
manifest. # 23 could possibly be the brother of this passenger.

Transcriber's Notes:
Since every page is numbered from 1 to 30, the transcriber has numbered the
passengers continously for ease of transcribing and referencing.
* An asterisk indicates an error on the part of the original recorder, not
the transcriber, or is used to call your attention to additional information
in the transcriber's notes.
? Indicates a letter or number which could not be determined due to the
condition of the manifest or handwriting of the original recorder.
^ Indicates letters are omitted and the following letter is superscripted.
Column 24: in the first line of this column PERMAN... is typed, NO underneath.
Most passengers then have "as above" in the line. Passengers that have perm...
hand written will be noted.
All passengers stating Vienna, Germany as their place of birth are correct.
Vienna was in Austria and is now back in Austria. Adolf Hitler, wanting to
combine all German states into one country, convinced the Austrians to be part
of Germany. From March 13, 1938 to 1945 Austria was actually part of Germany.
After May 8th, 1945 the Austrians did not want to be part of Germany anymore.
This was Hitler's big success before WW II, he was an Austrian by birth.
The occupation for most of these children is schoolboy, even for girls.
Str. is the German abbreviation for street.
At the bottom of the page is something illegible written, an initial and
10:45AM. This could be a remark and the initials of the customs inspector.
Notes from Mr. Stahl:
The Mouzinho was built in Kiel, Germany in 1907 for the Hamburg America Line and was originally named the Guglielmo Pierce. She changed owners and names several times before being acquired by the Companhia Colonial de Navegacao of Portugal in 1930 and renamed the Mouzinho.
The Mouzinho made two round voyages between Lisbon and New York in June and in August, 1941. My mother along with her brother and parents were passengers on the second voyage, arriving in New York on September 1, 1941. The passengers had to remain aboard ship until September 2nd since the 1st was Labor Day and no ships were allowed to unload. They traveled from Berlin to Lisbon in a passenger car that was "sealed" in Berlin as they traveled through Germany and France to Irun on the Spanish border then on to Lisbon. Their story is not unique. I have corresponded with several families from the voyage who have related similar stories about "sealed" train cars from Hamburg and Frankfurt going to Lisbon.
Included in the passengers on the August voyage were 44 children sponsored by the OSE (Oeuvre de Secours aux Enfants based in Paris) in conjunction with the US Committee for the Protection of European Children, Jewish Children's Aid and the American Friends Service Committee of Marseilles. These organizations arranged for close to 200 children to escape Europe to the United States on the two voyages of the Mouzinho and on a third voyage aboard the Serpa Pinto in September 1941. It appears that among these 200 children were thirty-five children who had been on the St. Louis and had been under the care of the OSE since the St. Louis returned to Europe in August 1939 after being denied entry elsewhere.
Please see the website OSE children in Foster Homes for more information.
Camp de Gurs:
Camp de Gurs was a large concentration camp near Pau, in southwestern France at the foot of the Pyrenees, that was used successively by independent France, Vichy France, and Nazi Germany. Gurs was built in 1939 initially to house Republican refugees from the Spanish Civil War and later held refugees fleeing persecution in Germany and Austria. When France capitulated to the Germans in June 1940, Gurs became the main concentration camp for Marshal Philippe Pétain's collaborationist government in unoccupied (Vichy) France, receiving Jews and various dissidents. By 1941 there were 15,000 inmates, including Jews expelled from Germany and Belgium. Malnutrition and wretched sanitation killed great numbers. In late 1942, many inmates were deported to the extermination camps of German-occupied Poland. Most Jews from Gurs were sent to the transit camp Drancy, near Paris, and from there to the death camps of Auschwitz and Sobibor. When deportations ended in August 1943, only 1,200 inmates remained, 48 of them Jews.
Passengers 23, 29, 30 and 31 (page 2) state as having their next of kin at this camp.
