Transcriber's Notes:
Passengers on the original manifest were not numbered, this was done by the
transcriber for ease of identifying notes.
The use of an * indicates an omission or error made in the original document
or a clarification by this transcriber.
The use of a '?' indicates a word or letters that could not be read, due to
the quality of the original document. This document extremely light.
The use of a caret '^' indicates the following letter has been
superscripted.
The surname of the witness to the sworn statement is indecipherable; it is
followed by 'DC' meaning Deputy Collector.
"U.S." is the only entry in the column re: "Country to which they intend to
become inhabitants"; that column has been omitted.
There are no deaths indicated; so that column has been omitted.
ALL passengers are classified as 'Steerage' passengers, EXCEPT the LAST
eleven passengers, #s 426 to 436 - from 'B.R.Hilton' to 'H????e Schwa???' -
who are listed as being in 'Saloon' class accomodations. The last column
has been omitted.
When an age is under 10, I have added leading zeros for clarity, though
there are none on the list. There are quite a few multiple listings of
family names. I suggest reading all three pages of this shipıs list.
The LDS FHL microfilm of this particular original list is extremely light
and therefore it is HIGHLY recommended you check the original list for your
passenger/s.

VADERLAND
Built by Palmers Shipbuilding & Iron Co, Jarrow-on-Tyne. She was a 2,748
gross ton ship, length 320.5ft x beam 38.5ft, one funnel, three masts, iron construction,
single screw and a speed of 13 knots. Unusually for this time, she had her engines
(and funnel) aft and was designed for the bulk carriage of petroleum and passengers
but never carried the former. There was accommodation for 30-1st (later increased to 70)
and 800-3rd class passengers. Launched on 21st Aug.1872 for the Red Star Line of Antwerp,
she sailed from Antwerp on her maiden voyage to Falmouth, Halifax and Philadelphia on
20th Jan.1873. On 25th Mar.1873 she started her first Antwerp - Philadelphia direct
sailing and on 29th Nov.1876 commenced her first Antwerp - New York voyage. Between
1877-87 she sailed between Antwerp and New York or Philadelphia, starting her last
New York voyage on 26th Oct.1887, subsequently sailing to Philadelphia until in
March 1889 she was sold to French owners and renamed GEOGRAPHIQUE. She was sunk in
collision in Oct.1889.[North Atlantic Seaway by N.R.P.Bonsor, vol.2,p.849-50]
