Transcriber's Notes:
An asterisk (*) indicates either difficulty in deciphering the handwriting of
the manifest or something in the Transcriber Notes to which the reader should
refer.
A question mark (?) indicates a letter or a number that can not be transcribed
definitely.
A caret (^) indicates that the following letter in a word or name is
superscripted.
The transcriber numbered the passengers consecutively even though they are not
numbered in the original manifest.
The recorder of the manifest often abbreviates given names by writing the first
few letters of the name, then skipping letters and then writing the final
letter as superscripted. In these cases, the transcriber uses the symbol (^)
to indicate that the following letter is superscripted, i.e., D^d for David,
Tho^s for Thomas, Sam^l for Samuel, W^m for William, etc. Othertimes, the
recorder abbreviates names by writing the first few letters, skipping letters
and then adding the final letter of the name, i.e., Bridg or Brgt for Bridget,
Margt or Mgt for Margaret, Thos for Thomas, etc.. The recorder also uses common
abbreviations for given names such as Jno for John and Mic for Michael.
In writing names of passengers, the recorder as a matter of routine substitutes
"Mc" for "Mac" in surnames of the Irish passengers.
