Transcriber's Notes:
A question mark (?) indicates a letter or a number that can not be transcribed
definitely.
An asterisk (*) indicates either difficulty in deciphering the handwriting of
the manifest or something in the Transcriber Notes to which the reader should
refer.
The transcriber numbered the passengers consecutively, even though they are
not numbered in the original manifest.
The entry "United States" in the citizenship and destination columns is
shortened to "U.S.A." for formatting reasons.
* The port of departure is Rio de Janeiro not New York as is entered on the
original in error in the Captain's sworn statement at the top of the manifest.
4 Passenger's given name and initial appears to be recorded as "George W.",
but are listed as "G. M." in Betty Antunes de Oliveira's published transcription
from Rio de Janeiro newspapers of Americans' names in inwards and outwards
passenger lists between 1865 and 1890 in which this passenger is mentioned
as arriving in Rio de Janeiro on 24 Feb aboard the GUAPORE from Southern Brazil.
10-11 There is an accent mark above the "a" in given name "Joao".
13 There is an acute accent mark above the "e" in given name "Jose".
14 There is an accent mark above the "a" in given name "Joao".
Correspondence Note 09/17/2004
In 1981 Betty Antunes de Oliveira published her transcription from Rio de Janeiro
newspapers of Americans' names in inwards and outwards passenger lists between 1865
and 1890. This voyage of MERRIMACK departed from Rio de Janeiro on 25 Feb 1868.
The Americans listed in the newspaper Correio Mercantil of 27 Feb encompass passengers
1, 2 and 4 from this manifest of the SS Merrimack. David Asprey would be happy
to be a lookup source for Betty's work - she published it privately in very few copies
and kindly let him have one some years back.
