WHAT TYPE OF SHIP WAS JOHN BARRY

Extracts from the book Shipping Arrivals and Departures, Sydney 1826-1840, by I.H. Nicholson, p 19 it said "John Barry, ship, 520/524". On that page it was the second largest vessel listed. In this same reference it says it made 7 other trips to Sydney between 1834 and 1840. It is not known if more were made after 1840 or if it had been to Sydney prior to 1826.

Sydney Gazette, of 12 July 1826, classified it as a "ship" not a brig or schooner. In the absence of other data this might give some indication of tonnage and size.

"The John Barry was a hired transport not a convict ship"

    b = year of birth, when known
    d = year of death, when known
  wid = widower
    ? = in the subsequent marriages of these children, the names of the
        witnesses to the marriage suggest they are members of this family.
