Ship Francis P. Sage
I, S. G. Stevens Master of Ship Francis P. Sage do solemnly, sincerely, and truly Swear that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of New York, is a full and perfect list of all the passengers taken on board of the said Ship at Liverpool from which port said Ship has now arrived; and that on said list is truly designated the age, the sex, and the occupation of each of said passengers, the part of the vessel occupied by each during the passage, the country to which each belongs, and also the country of which it is intended by each to become an inhabitant; and that said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of said passengers who have died on said voyage, and the names and ages of those who died.
So help me God. (signed) S G Stevens
Sworn to this 26th May 1864, Before me (signed) ???????? (illegible signature)

Transcriber's Notes:
* An asterisk (*) indicates the original recorder made an omission or error, or is used by the transcriber to call your
attention to additional information in the Transcriber's Notes below.
? A question mark (?) indicates a letter or number that could not be read due to condition of original manifest or
handwriting of the original recorder.
^ A caret (^) indicates that the letter after the caret was written in raised script and underlined. The recorder used
this superscript method for some abbreviated given names and occupations. Supersctipt indicated letters were missing
prior to the raised underlined final letter(s). For example, Labo^r likely meant Labourer (three letters were missing
prior to the raised underlined final 'r') and Tho^s likely meant Thomas (two letters were missing prior to the raised
underlined final 's'). The recorder was not consistent in using superscript: given name for passenger #16 was written
Thomas and for passenger #18 was written Tho^s; occupation for passenger #1 was written Labourer and for passenger #7
was written Labo^r. Superscript was also used for the title 'Mrs' throughout the manifest, beginning with passenger #11,
M^rs Carbery - the 'rs' was raised and underlined.
* All pasengers were recorded as intending to inhabit 'United States - America', therefore that column has been omitted
from this transcription.
* All passengers were recorded as occupying Steerage on the voyage, therefore that column has been omitted from this
transcription.
* Other abbreviation styles: The recorder abbreviated some given names using only the first few letters of the name
instead of superscript. See the next note. Usually, but not always, a period appeared at the end of the abbreviation.
If no period appeared on the manifest, the transcriber has not added one.
* Suggested given names for abbreviations used by the recorder (with or without a period following the abbreviation):
Alex - Alexander
Arch - Archibald
Car^l - Carroll? Carswell?
Cath - Catherine, Cathleen
Chas - Charles
Con - Conrad
D^l - Daniel
Ed - Edward, Edwin
Ferd^d - Ferdinand
Geo - George
Honor - Honoria
Jas - James
Joe or Jos. - Joseph
Kate - Katherine, Kathleen
M^l or Mich^l - Michael
Marg^t or Margt - Margaret
Mat - Matthew
Nich - Nicholas
Pat - Patrick
Rich^d - Richard
Rob^t - Robert
Tho^s - Thomas
Tim - Timothy
W^m or Wm - William
* Baggage column: The recorder used the last column of the manifest for two items: the part of the ship occupied
(Steerage), plus the number of pieces (or boxes) of baggage. At the top of this column on all 9 pages of the
handwritten manifest the recorder wrote 'Steerage' in the first row on the page, and for each subsequent passenger
on the page there was a ditto mark under the word Steerage. However the first page was slightly different: the word
"baggage" was squeezed above the word "Steerage" at the top of the column, and for passengers #2 and #3 the words
"Baggage 3 Boxes" were entered in this column. This may mean that said 3 boxes of baggage were attributable to
passengers 1, 2, 3 and 4 who all had the same surname (Davis) who were traveling together, although that was not
stated on the manifest. For passengers after #3 Davy Davis when there was a number to indicate baggage the word 'box'
or 'boxes' was not used by the recorder, but the transcriber has added this word for clarity. On page 1 the recorder
used a dash (---) as a ditto indicator following the baggage number, but the dash (---) was not used for baggage on
pages 2 through 9. In subsequent rows on all pages there was a ditto mark (") to indicate the part of the ship occupied
by each passenger, but not every passenger had an entry for baggage. A reasonable interpretation is that the amount of
baggage for each group or family was listed once; although not every individual traveling had an entry for baggage.
The recorder may have overlooked some items of baggage.
* Steerage: As stated in the first note above and the previous note, every passenger was recorded as being an occupant of
Steerage during the voyage. It is unusual that no passengers occupied any other class such as Cabin, First, Second, or
Saloon.
* Repeated names: Many manifest recorders used a ditto mark to indicate repeated information. The recorder of this
manifest did in fact use the ditto for most information (sex, occupation, country of origin, etc.) but also used a
different device for repeated names. After writing the full name of the first family member, for subsequent family
members a long dash (---) was used beneath the original surname. Thus, passenger #1 was Henry Davis, and passenger #2
was listed as Edward ---, and so on. Occasionally (but not always) the recorder used the dash for a given name of the
next passenger. The transcriber has interpreted this to mean a passenger with --- for a given name had the same given
name as the previous passenger. Specific instances where this device was used are noted below in Transcriber's Notes
for passengers.
* Infants: For children identified as 'Infants' there was no number in the age column except for two of the infants who
died: passengers #116 age 1 year & 3 months, and #424, age 3 months. Since the age was listed for other children as
young as age 2, the transcriber believes infants were less than 2 years old although this was not stated on the
manifest. Note that the recorder often did not indicate the sex of infants, although this information can be surmised
from most names.
* Occupation of adult females: Only a few adult females had occupations; for those who did not, the recorder used the
occupation column to indicate their family or social status: Spinster, Wife, Matron, etc.
* Children: In the occupation column for young males (except infants) the recorder listed their family status "Child"
but in many instances this information was missing. For some children the sex was missing but that information usually
can be surmised from the name. For young females the recorder usually said their status was Child, but for some girls
as young as age 10 the recorder entered Spinster as their occupation/social status (for example passengers #66 and #69).
However for youngsters categorized as 'Child' the recorder did not specify the family status (for example 'son' or
'daughter') so some children may have been traveling with an older sibling or other relative and not with their parents.
* Deaths: There were 3 deaths on this voyage, all infants, as noted.
* Unless otherwise explained in these notes, information has been transcribed as seen, regardless of the spelling,
capitalization, punctuation or abbreviations used on the manifest.
* Passenger numbers: The transcriber has assigned a passenger number to all individuals listed on the manifest
consecutively in the order they appeared, even though the recorder did not give one passenger a number, and in another
instance used the same number twice. In the first instance, an unnamed male infant who was born and died on the voyage
was given his own (unnumbered) row on the manifest beneath passenger #30 Anne Burns. The transcriber has assigned #31
to that infant. Next the recorder in error used number 337 for two consecutive passengers, and the transcriber has
given the second passenger his own number. To resolve these numbering issues, the transcriber has added two numbers to
the manifest; thus this transcription lists 498 numbered passengers, while the original manifest listed 496 numbered
passengers.
254: following the Go in the surname there are 2 or 3 small letters, all above the line, none with high loops. Looks
most like "nvn" which makes no sense. Could be "ron" or "wn" which would make the name Goronan, Gownan. If the
first questionable letter is an unusual open 'r' then the letters could be "rm" making the name Gorman.
273: surname - last few letters consist of a series of small bumps with no loops above or below the line, look like
'uu?' or 'nu?' or 'ues' or 'um' none of which make any sense placed after the first four letters 'Slaa' which are
fairly clear. Could be 'ner' or 'sen' and the name would be Slaaner or Slaasen.
274: 2nd vowel in the surname is smudged; it could be an 'i' and the name would be Flanigan.
275, 276, 277: there is a black smudge over the "baggage" column so it is unknown if these passengers had baggage.
296, 297: 2nd letter in surname looks like a loop that forms the bottom half of "b" but there is no downstroke leading
to it; could be an 'e' and the name would be Seeverow.
300: given name Esetrioh is unusual but spelling appears clear on the manifest; no alternatives seem obvious.
302, 303, 304, 305, 306. 307: For these children the recorder did not write a country or ditto mark in the "country to
which they belong" column. Since they had the same last name as passenger #301 (Murray) it is likely they were all
from England.
310-312: The recorder did not write a country or ditto mark in the "country to which they belong" column. Since they had
the same last name as passenger #309 (Scott) it is likely they were all from England.
315-319: The recorder did not write a country or ditto mark in the "country to which they belong column.
317: in this instance, the ? means there is a visible question mark on the manifest written after the abbreviated given
name Arch.
325: in surname the name could be Alkinson, because the 2nd letter looks like an "l" since it is not crossed as a "t"
should be. However it is just as likely that the recorcer neglected to cross the "t" and that the passenger is
travelling with passengers #327 & 328 whose name is clearly Atkinson.
337-339: surname could be Gonehan.
338-341: The recorder did not write a country or ditto mark in the "country to which they belong" column. Since the
passengers had the same last name as #337 Martin Gonahan/Gonehan, it is likely that they were all from England.
Also see the following two notes; if passengers #340 and 341 had the same last name (part of the Gonahan/Gonehan
family) then it is likely they were also from England.
340: it is not likely that this female infant was traveling alone, so she was probably the baby of the Gonahan/Gonehan
family (thus her name would be Mary Anne Gonahan or Gonehan and the recorder forgot to enter the usual dash mark
(---) or ditto to indicate she had the same surname as previous passenger.
341: Mae is an uncommon last name but there was no dash mark or ditto to indicate that this passenger had the same
surname as another passenger. If she was part of the family with the previous 4 passengers, her name could be Mary
Mae Gonahan/Gonehan.
385, there is a smudge and scribble over the word written in the "occupation" column, making all but the last three
letters illegible.
390: the recorder used a dash (---) for the given name, directly under the previous passenger's given name, Bridget. The
transcriber interprets this to mean the previous name is repeated.
397-398: in surname there is no "s" after the "z".
403: given name could be Libbey; capital S and L written by the recorder were very similar but this one looks more like
an S.
408: there is an illegible scribble in the age column and the passenger is clearly identified as an Infant, so the
recorder may have written an age, then attempted to delete it with a scribble (because the recorder did not list
ages for other infants).
417, 418: occupation is two words, both extremely faded; first word looks most like 'General' and second word may be
'Servant'.
424: the full entry for this passenger was written as follows: "Bridget ---- (dash/ditto mark for surname, meaning
Salmon) (dash/ditto mark for Ireland) F Infant Aged three months Died (ditto mark for Steerage)".
425: given name could be Jos.
444: surname looks most like Bolan, but there is a small spot on the manifest above the last letter. If the recorder
intended to dot an 'i' then the surname could be Bolari or Bolasi; if the spot is just a smudge on the paper, the
name is Bolan.
450: surname could be Heskin or Heakin.
454-456: surname could be McCook.
457: 2nd and 3rd letters in given name are smudged but look most like 'er' so name could be Jerry.
467: last few letters of occupation are not clear. Looks most like Grocer, but could be Groom if he was travelling with
passengers #469 and 471 whose occupation was clearly Groom.
488: surname could be Griffin, as there may be an 'r' squeezed in front of the 1st 'i'.
495: age not clear, consists of two numbers that could be 20, 25 or 28. There is no occupation listed for this passenger.
496: age consists of two numbers but is covered with a scribble and cannot be read. There is no occupation listed for
this passenger.
497: there appears to be a question mark written after the given name initial 'H'.
498: there appears to be a question mark written after the given name initial 'W'.
