Ship Francis P. Sage
I, S. G. Stevens Master of Ship Francis P. Sage do solemnly, sincerely, and truly Swear that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of New York, is a full and perfect list of all the passengers taken on board of the said Ship at Liverpool from which port said Ship has now arrived; and that on said list is truly designated the age, the sex, and the occupation of each of said passengers, the part of the vessel occupied by each during the passage, the country to which each belongs, and also the country of which it is intended by each to become an inhabitant; and that said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of said passengers who have died on said voyage, and the names and ages of those who died.
So help me God. (signed) S G Stevens
Sworn to this 26th May 1864, Before me (signed) ???????? (illegible signature)

Transcriber's Notes:
* An asterisk (*) indicates the original recorder made an omission or error, or is used by the transcriber to call your
attention to additional information in the Transcriber's Notes below.
? A question mark (?) indicates a letter or number that could not be read due to condition of original manifest or
handwriting of the original recorder.
^ A caret (^) indicates that the letter after the caret was written in raised script and underlined. The recorder used
this superscript method for some abbreviated given names and occupations. Supersctipt indicated letters were missing
prior to the raised underlined final letter(s). For example, Labo^r likely meant Labourer (three letters were missing
prior to the raised underlined final 'r') and Tho^s likely meant Thomas (two letters were missing prior to the raised
underlined final 's'). The recorder was not consistent in using superscript: given name for passenger #16 was written
Thomas and for passenger #18 was written Tho^s; occupation for passenger #1 was written Labourer and for passenger #7
was written Labo^r. Superscript was also used for the title 'Mrs' throughout the manifest, beginning with passenger #11,
M^rs Carbery - the 'rs' was raised and underlined.
* All pasengers were recorded as intending to inhabit 'United States - America', therefore that column has been omitted
from this transcription.
* All passengers were recorded as occupying Steerage on the voyage, therefore that column has been omitted from this
transcription.
* Other abbreviation styles: The recorder abbreviated some given names using only the first few letters of the name
instead of superscript. See the next note. Usually, but not always, a period appeared at the end of the abbreviation.
If no period appeared on the manifest, the transcriber has not added one.
* Suggested given names for abbreviations used by the recorder (with or without a period following the abbreviation):
Alex - Alexander
Arch - Archibald
Car^l - Carroll? Carswell?
Cath - Catherine, Cathleen
Chas - Charles
Con - Conrad
D^l - Daniel
Ed - Edward, Edwin
Ferd^d - Ferdinand
Geo - George
Honor - Honoria
Jas - James
Joe or Jos. - Joseph
Kate - Katherine, Kathleen
M^l or Mich^l - Michael
Marg^t or Margt - Margaret
Mat - Matthew
Nich - Nicholas
Pat - Patrick
Rich^d - Richard
Rob^t - Robert
Tho^s - Thomas
Tim - Timothy
W^m or Wm - William
* Baggage column: The recorder used the last column of the manifest for two items: the part of the ship occupied
(Steerage), plus the number of pieces (or boxes) of baggage. At the top of this column on all 9 pages of the
handwritten manifest the recorder wrote 'Steerage' in the first row on the page, and for each subsequent passenger
on the page there was a ditto mark under the word Steerage. However the first page was slightly different: the word
"baggage" was squeezed above the word "Steerage" at the top of the column, and for passengers #2 and #3 the words
"Baggage 3 Boxes" were entered in this column. This may mean that said 3 boxes of baggage were attributable to
passengers 1, 2, 3 and 4 who all had the same surname (Davis) who were traveling together, although that was not
stated on the manifest. For passengers after #3 Davy Davis when there was a number to indicate baggage the word 'box'
or 'boxes' was not used by the recorder, but the transcriber has added this word for clarity. On page 1 the recorder
used a dash (---) as a ditto indicator following the baggage number, but the dash (---) was not used for baggage on
pages 2 through 9. In subsequent rows on all pages there was a ditto mark (") to indicate the part of the ship occupied
by each passenger, but not every passenger had an entry for baggage. A reasonable interpretation is that the amount of
baggage for each group or family was listed once; although not every individual traveling had an entry for baggage.
The recorder may have overlooked some items of baggage.
* Steerage: As stated in the first note above and the previous note, every passenger was recorded as being an occupant of
Steerage during the voyage. It is unusual that no passengers occupied any other class such as Cabin, First, Second, or
Saloon.
* Repeated names: Many manifest recorders used a ditto mark to indicate repeated information. The recorder of this
manifest did in fact use the ditto for most information (sex, occupation, country of origin, etc.) but also used a
different device for repeated names. After writing the full name of the first family member, for subsequent family
members a long dash (---) was used beneath the original surname. Thus, passenger #1 was Henry Davis, and passenger #2
was listed as Edward ---, and so on. Occasionally (but not always) the recorder used the dash for a given name of the
next passenger. The transcriber has interpreted this to mean a passenger with --- for a given name had the same given
name as the previous passenger. Specific instances where this device was used are noted below in Transcriber's Notes
for passengers.
* Infants: For children identified as 'Infants' there was no number in the age column except for two of the infants who
died: passengers #116 age 1 year & 3 months, and #424, age 3 months. Since the age was listed for other children as
young as age 2, the transcriber believes infants were less than 2 years old although this was not stated on the
manifest. Note that the recorder often did not indicate the sex of infants, although this information can be surmised
from most names.
* Occupation of adult females: Only a few adult females had occupations; for those who did not, the recorder used the
occupation column to indicate their family or social status: Spinster, Wife, Matron, etc.
* Children: In the occupation column for young males (except infants) the recorder listed their family status "Child"
but in many instances this information was missing. For some children the sex was missing but that information usually
can be surmised from the name. For young females the recorder usually said their status was Child, but for some girls
as young as age 10 the recorder entered Spinster as their occupation/social status (for example passengers #66 and #69).
However for youngsters categorized as 'Child' the recorder did not specify the family status (for example 'son' or
'daughter') so some children may have been traveling with an older sibling or other relative and not with their parents.
* Deaths: There were 3 deaths on this voyage, all infants, as noted.
* Unless otherwise explained in these notes, information has been transcribed as seen, regardless of the spelling,
capitalization, punctuation or abbreviations used on the manifest.
* Passenger numbers: The transcriber has assigned a passenger number to all individuals listed on the manifest
consecutively in the order they appeared, even though the recorder did not give one passenger a number, and in another
instance used the same number twice. In the first instance, an unnamed male infant who was born and died on the voyage
was given his own (unnumbered) row on the manifest beneath passenger #30 Anne Burns. The transcriber has assigned #31
to that infant. Next the recorder in error used number 337 for two consecutive passengers, and the transcriber has
given the second passenger his own number. To resolve these numbering issues, the transcriber has added two numbers to
the manifest; thus this transcription lists 498 numbered passengers, while the original manifest listed 496 numbered
passengers.
9: there is no entry and no ditto mark in the "country" of origin column for passenger #9. Ireland may be implied
because passenger #10 was from Ireland, which was indicated by a ditto mark beneath passenger #9 and previous
passengers. In this column the recorder used ditto marks until the country of origin of a subsequent passenger
changed. Thus the country of origin (Ireland) for passengers # 6 through 23 was indicated by a ditto mark,
then "England" was written out for passenger #24.
17-19: surname could be Regan. The upper case B and R written by the recorder were very similar. In this case the
final downstroke looks like it curves back toward the initial upstroke which would make it more like B.
31: Unnamed Infant. The entire entry for this infant stated: "Infant Male - born on passage (ditto mark for Ireland
as nationality) - (another ditto mark for United States as intended habitation) - Died (another ditto mark for
Steerage)." Infant may have born to passenger #30 Anne Burns although that was not stated on the manifest, but
if so the name would be "Infant Burns".
39: given name "Christian" was clear, although the passenger is female and wife of passenger #38. Recorder may have
intended to write a or ine or iana at the end of the name, but did not do so.
40: surname could be Shannon. All of the letters following "Sh" were squished together to fit within the space of
the column, and also are a bit fuzzy. No loops above or below the line. Sherman or Shannon are equally possible.
50: there are scribble marks over the given name that partially obliterate it, but even so it looks like Patrick.
54-55: surname could be Gunty.
67: surname may be Tomothy.
75: in the baggage column there is a dark gray rectangle which looks like the imprint left after removing a piece
of old adhesive tape, and there appears to be a number '1' in that dark area.
90: surname may be Lahane. The vowel after the L looks most like u, could be a, but is not 'e'.
97: surname may be Keoharn.
100: no age was listed for this passenger.
104: given name could be Johanne.
108: the recorder used a dash (----) for the given name, directly under the previous passenger's given name, M^l.
This has been interpreted to mean the previous name is repeated. The recorder used this method (dash in lieu of
ditto) for surnames throughout.
116: the full listing for this passenger was written as follows: "Cath ---- (dash mark for surname, meaning
Cunningham) (another dash/ditto mark meaning F for female) (another dash/ditto mark for Ireland) Infant One
Year & 3 Months (another ditto mark for United States as intended habitation) Died (another ditto mark for
Steerage)".
121: surname could be Sriglon.
130: the manifest is creased over the 3rd and 4th letters of the surname. Looks like 'lv' and no other possibilties
seem likely. There is also a smudge in the baggage column but there appears to be a number '1' under the smudge.
134: in the baggage column there is a dark gray rectangle which looks like the imprint left after removing a piece
of old adhesive tape. There appears to be a number '1' in that dark area.
143: in surname, 2nd letter could be 'e' or 'c' thus, Meheran or Mcheran. The 'h' in the surname is not capitalized
on the manifest.
146-148: 2nd and 3rd letters of surname are very small, squished together, all above line with no loops. Looks most like
'er' which makes the name Merganson; also could be 'u' but that would make the name Muganson which is not
likely.
147: age could be 28.
153: surname could be Bush, but first letter looks more like 'R' as the final downward stroke does not curve all the
way back to form a bottom loop as it should with uppercase B.
154: first letter of surname looks most like S but also is similar to capital T or L written by the recorder
elsewhere on the manifest. Thus the name could be Teague or League.
160: surname could be Brenar.
174: in given name the second 's' appears to have a loop around it which may have been the recorder's attempt to
cross out the letter to correct the spelling to 'Isabelle'.
176-177: surname not clear. Sh??d??g. The questionable letters after the "Sh" look identical to the questionable letters
after the "d". Looks most like "or" in both places which would make the name Shordorg. Also, the first letter
looks somewhat like T which would make the name Th??d??g or Thordorg.
180, 183: these two unnamed infants appear to have been part of a group of six other passengers with surname Heywood: two
adult females identified as "wife", one adult male (a farmer) and three children. Because the recorder placed
each infant directly under a Heywood adult, we might assume that the infants had the surname Heywood and each
was placed directly beneath his or her parent, although this is not stated on the manifest. Thus each unnamed
infant might be named "Infant Heywood."
198: in given name the last letter ends with long stroke below the line, but is not f, j, p, q, z, so is either g or
y although diffferent from g and y used by recorder elsewhere on the manifest. The letters after the "e"
consist of three small bumps, all above the line with no loops. Possible combinations that would fit are ney,
ssey, rny, ring which would make the the given name Gilleney, Gillessey, Gillerny, Gillering, none of which are
familiar names. Note there is a 'dot' on the paper above the name which could be either a smudge or an intended
dot over an 'i'.
217: the recorder used a dash (---) for the given name, directly under the previous passenger's given name, Margt.
This has been interpreted to mean the previous name is repeated.
246: ? there is a small tear or black circle over the portion of the surname following the 'h', so 1 or 2 letters
cannot be seen with certainty. No loops appear above or below the line, and no dot (so not an i). The unknown
letter(s) should include a vowel and could be a or e. If so, name would be Croughall? Croughell? Croughwell?
