Correspondence 07/02/2003 passengers #11-13 Carr
Emily was born Margaret Emily Carr in Everton North, a district of Liverpool
in 1885. She was the daughter to Thomas and Selena Carr, younger sister to
Tom and Salina. The mother died in the fall of 1888. She was laid to
rest in Amfield Cemetery in Liverpool. About 1892 or so it is believed the
elder Thomas came to America alone to estabish himself. He returned to get
his children in 1894. Father, son, and one daughter, Emily arrived on this
ship. The elder daughter elected to remain behind in Liverpool, it is believed
she lived with her paternal grandfather.
In 1900 the three Carrs along with a new wife, Josephine, were found living
on Waverly Place in an area just out of Newark named Clinton Twp on Waverly
Place. Thomas was proprieter of a boarding house. Tom worked as a glassblower,
Emily it is assumed attended school.
By 1918 war had broken out and the elder Thomas signed up. The Americans
wouldn't take him as he was alrady in his 60s. He dyed his hair and mustache
and went to Canada. They thought he was only in his 40s. He served in England
and France until fatigue caught up with him. He came home about two weeks
before the Armistace. While in England he was able to see his daughter Salina
and grandchild in Liverpool. By then all the children were married.
Tom lived upstate and had a confectionair shop. Emily lived in Virginia
w/her fellow English Expat Joseph and daughter Anna. Joseph died and Emily
returned to NJ.
In 1921 she traveled to Minnesota to meet and marry a man she had
corresponded with, William Storie. He was the local Postmaster, and
newspaper publisher in his small town along the US/Canadian border.
She gave him 2 sons William and George. She died giving birth of the
3rd in November 1925. He died as well. The second son, George, was my
father. The younger Thomas returned from a trip to England in 1924 on
the ship Saxonia out of Southampton. He is listed by full name
Thomas Moody Carr. Doug Storie
