Correspondence added 8-21-2005
After searching intermittently for approximately a year I finally found
my great grandfather John Kelley and his brother William arriving in
New York on 4 May 1860 on the ship Emerson Smith.

I first found John and his family in the 1880 Census, however, he was
using his middle name "Taul". His wife Mary and their children including
my grandfather were listed. Suspecting that Taul was not his given name
(it means "bull's forehead"), since he was a Catholic and needed a
Christian name for Christening, I checked backward to the 1770 Census and
found Mary and the children, and "John" her husband.

They settled in and lived out their lives (including the children)
in Philadelphia. John and his sons Bernard and Fredrick had Ship's
Master papers and were tug boat captains and harbor pilots.

My grandfather (born 1867) worked as a "hatter" for the Stetson Hat
Company, in Philadelphia, all of his working life.

Great grandfather John, died between 1884 and 1900. A son John was
born in 1884, and he his shown with his sister Sarah and brother
Fredrick, living with their mother Mary as head of the household
in the 1900 Census. Finding my great grandmothers's date of arrival
will be impossible unless I can discover her maiden name. John and Mary
were married abt. 1865 (Bernard was born in 1866).
Thank you very much for the information this site provides.
Regards to all,
Dr. James J. Kelly Sr.
