Transcriber's Notes:
An asterisk (*) indicates either difficulty in deciphering the handwriting of
the manifest or something in the Transcriber Notes to which the reader should
refer.
A question mark (?) indicates a letter or a number that can not be
transcribed definitely.
A caret (^) indicates that the following letter in a word or name is
superscripted.
The transcriber numbered the passengers consecutively 1-298, even though they
are not numbered in the original manifest.
The recorder of the manifest abbreviates most given names by writing only the
first few letters of the name (e.g., Joh for Johann, Gottl for Gottleib, Chr
for Christian, etc.). Other times the recorder abbreviates given names by
writing the first few letters of the name, then skipping letters and then
writing the final letter (e.g., Margt for Margaret, Wilhe for Wilhemine, Joha
for Johanna, Christe for Christine, etc.).
The copy of the original manifest is in good condition and quite readable.
However, the recorder's formation of some letters is often not distinct and
some pairs of letters are easily confused. Examples of letters almost always
difficult to defferentiate include the combinations (a, o), (n, u), (a, u)
and sometimes (n, r). Consequently, transcribed names are suseptible to
error, and should be viewed with some skepticism. In cases in which the
correct spelling of a name is unclear, the transcriber includes viable
spelling alternatives of names in the footnotes.
The recorder did not use ditto marks to indicate "same as above". Many
surname, sex and occupation entries are left blank and the reader is
confronted with the problem of interpreting the recorder's intended meaning.
The transcriber uses the surname of the passenger above for cases of children
whose surname is left blank, and use the sex last entered for a passenger
above, and correlate this interpretation with whether the passenger has a
masculine or feminine given name. Occupations are only given in the
transcription if the recorder entered them. Since it was common for
recorders not to make an entry in the occupation column for female passengers
or for children, a possible though not a certain interpretation of the
intended occupation where left blank is that of the occupation of the last
adult male entered above.
The recorder abbreviates many of the occupations listed in the manifest
(e.g., "Labr" for Laborer, "Mech" for Mechanic, "Merch" for Merchant and
"Sevt" for Servant).

Correspondence February 4, 2005 passenger #14 Wohlrab
#14 Wahlrab, Wohlrab, Wohlrob, Or Wahrob. First name Carl. Married. A mechanic. And
he is listed as living in USA.
There was a Civil War soldier that fought on the Confederate side, who was a private
and the bugler in the Phelan's Light Artilliary Company. He was listed as C. Wahlrab
and there was a confusion of spelling there also. So it was questionable what the
real spelling is. They sound pretty much the same.
The "C' could well be Carl. It appeared strange that of all my German heritage,
this fellow appeared out of nowhere fighting for the Confederates. Being a mechanic
would make sense to have him in the artilliary compnay, albiet a musical mechanic.
Be glad to hear from anyone re this study. And will keep watch for a Carl Wahlrab
that was born in 1837.
Otto Wahlrab USA
Correspondence August 3, 2007 passengers 155-157 Haan
I can tell you for sure that the surname of passenger #157 on the Bremen
(5 March 1868) was Haan. Elise Haan was my great-grandmother,
and I’ve actually seen her original identification. Odds are that passengers
#155 and 156 were probably her father and sister; I know my grandfather had an Aunt Anna.
