SS Atlantic
Most passenger and crew names of the SS Atlantic, that sank off the coast of Nova Scotia on April 1, 1873, were taken from the New York Times, dated April 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 7th. The edition of April 2nd, 1873 did not have any passenger lists. There is an account though of people going to the office of the White Star line to find out the fate of friends or relatives. A few names are mentioned; these were added to the passenger list below. Names and their spelling vary in most editions of the newspaper, therefore a duplication of names might have occurred while transcribing the passengers. The scans were also not very clear at times. Some of the foreign names are also spelled phonetically.
Coloumns represent: Passenger number, name, country or city of origin, sources, additonal information in the line underneath the name.

1210: the middle initial seems to be Agnew, given in the newspaper.
1211: the last name was also printed as Frith.
1214: the last name was also printed as Cuppaige, no first name is given.
1229: the last name was also printed as Conolly.
1237 & 1238: there are 2 crew members called Patrick Evans, this is not a transcriber's mistake.
1243: the last name was also printed as Hannar .
1248: one edition of the newspaper lists a William Kiely, the other one a Patrick Kiely.
This could be two different people or a mistake in the first names.
1250: the last name was also printed as Lane.
1251: the last name was also printed as Raylance.
1287: according to the book, it was a surprise to the surviving crew to find that
the well liked sailor Bill was actually a female. The belief of the author of
the book is that it could be Mary Merrill.
1291: the book refers as "Mr. Roylson, one of the crew" the last name was also printed as
this crew member.
