SS Atlantic
Most passenger and crew names of the SS Atlantic, that sank off the coast of Nova Scotia on April 1, 1873, were taken from the New York Times, dated April 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 7th. The edition of April 2nd, 1873 did not have any passenger lists. There is an account though of people going to the office of the White Star line to find out the fate of friends or relatives. A few names are mentioned; these were added to the passenger list below. Names and their spelling vary in most editions of the newspaper, therefore a duplication of names might have occurred while transcribing the passengers. The scans were also not very clear at times. Some of the foreign names are also spelled phonetically.
This letter to the Editor of the New York Times appeared in the edition dated April 5th, 1873, followed by a list of lost passengers.
To the Editor of the New York Times:
The cable has brought me today a full list of steerage passengers per Atlantic, not yet accounted for, of which I send you a copy. This list will prove to be in excess of the actual loss, from the difficulty in separating, in the cable message, initials and christian names in the case of families, but all anxiety can be dismissed by those who have surmised that friends might be on board if their names be not found on the list, or in that of the saved, already published in your journal, as doubtless they did not embark on our ill-fated steamer. I am, dear sir, yours obediently, J.H. Sparks Saturday April 5, 1873

also sister-in-law to Samuel W. Bass, Esq. She travelled to Europe (Dresden, Germany)
with her ailing nephew, Samuel W. Bass Jr. They were accompanied by passenger # 377,
John W. Price, a lawyer. The party travelling together was booked on another ship to
go back home, but her nephew got worse. He passed away in London just before the
Atlantic sailed, Miss Barker boarded the SS Atlantic.
One of the newspaper editions reported that Miss Barker was from Chicago,
this was later corrected to New York City.
372: this passenger's last name was also reported as Henry T. Jewitt. He is reported as
being 45 years old. He left his wife, a son and a daughter behind to travel to Europe on

383: the name is also printed as Albert J. Sumner. One edition of the New York times reported that

former governor of Mass.

400: the first name was also reported as Johan.
404: one source printed the name as K. P.Arvidson.
405: one edition of the New York Times printed the name as Jas. Van Arx, the other one as Arx only.
This could be the same person.
407: no first name is given for this passenger.
409: this could possibly be the wife of James Bateman who survived, # 25.
411: one source printed the last name as Barl.
413: the name was also given as G.M. Bengston.
414: one source printed the first name as Anders.

522 & 523: these 2 passengers have the same first names as passengers # 519 & 520, the last name
is spelled a little different though. It might be a coincidence that they have
the same first names, they might be the same passengers.

No name of the infant is mentioned, just Elizabeth Irwin (Erwin) and infant.

has therefore assumed that this is a male child.
548: the name of this passenger was also printed as Nils Erlandsen.
549: one reporter spelled the name Andrias Engler. The first name is probably spelled
phonetically and should be Andreas.

Correspondence added 2-20-06, passenger 479, CHRISTIANSON/CHRISTIANSEN
Although some sources said Dr. Emil Christiansen did not survive the wreck, he did indeed
survive with only a broken arm. This was confirmed by a descendent, Mr. Robert Huettmann.
The spelling of the name in the sources used for this transcription was wrong; Emil is spelled
without an e at the end and Christiansen is spelled with an e, not an o.
Carl Emil Johannes Christiansen was born about 1845 in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. He always
went by the name Emil. He received his medical degree from Heidelberg University. Dr. Christiansen
lived for a while in Chicago and there married Augusta Maria Putscher on 26 December 1876. For most
of his life he practiced medicine in Grand Island, Nebraska, but when he died in 1914 he was buried
in Forest Park, Illinois. It is not know when and where he entered the United States. For more
information please contact Robert Huettmann
