I, Geo. Burton, Master of the S.S. Arabic do solemnly, sincerely, and truly swear
that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me
to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of the City of New
York, is a full and perfect list of all the passengers taken on board the said
vessel at Liverpool from which Port said vessel has now arrived; and that on
said list is truly designated the age, the sex, and the calling of each of said
passengers, the location of the compartment or space occupied by each during the
passage, the country of citizenship of each, and also the destination or
location intended by each; and that said List or Manifest truly sets forth the
number of said passengers who have died on said voyage, and the dates and causes
of death, and the names and ages of those who died; also of the pieces of
baggage of each; also a true statement, so far as it can be ascertained, with
reference to the intention of each alien passenger as to a projected sojourn in
this country. So help me God. (Signed) Geo. Burton.
Sworn to this Aug. 2,1887, before me. (signed) T. Jocum, DC
List or Manifest of ALL THE PASSENGERS taken on board the SS Arabic whereof Geo. Burton is Master, from Liverpool, burthen 2989 tons.
Columns represent: given name and surname, age, sex, calling, the country of which they are citizens, intended destination or location, location of compartment or space occupied, number of pieces of baggage. Since no one died during the voyage, that column was omitted in this transcription. All the passengers have "Permanent" entered in the column headed "Transient or in transit or intending protracted sojourn" so that column too was omitted in this transcription. An "X" entered immediately preceding the column headed "Intended destination" indicates American citizens or aliens who have visited the U.S. America before.

Transcriber's Notes:
An asterisk (*) indicates either difficulty in deciphering the handwriting
of the manifest or something that the reader should note.
A question mark (?) indicates a letter or a number that can not be
transcribed definitely.
An "a." entered into the Age column most likely indicates an adult who did not wish to
disclose his or her age.
An "X" entered immediately preceding the column headed "Intended destination" indicates
American citizens or aliens who have visited the U.S. America before.
"Orlop" entries in the column headed "location of compartment or space occupied"
indicates the lowest deck of a ship having at least four decks.
419 Entire name recorded as "Infant Thomas". No indication of whether "Thomas" is
the given name or surname. It is even possible that the infant was the son of
passenger #418 and the surname would therefore be "Keane". Numbers "3-5" were
recorded after the Calling column. The numbers are noted here as they may be
pertinent to researchers in the future, even though their significance is
unknown at this time.
425 Numbers "21-2" were recorded after the Calling column. The numbers are noted here
as they may be pertinent to researchers in the future, even though their
significance is unknown at this time.
427 Calling is difficult to decipher. First word is possibly "Provision". Second
word is possibly "Dealer" or "Seller" or something similar.
435 Initial of given name is possibly "T" or even "G".
438-439 Surname is "Nelson" or "Wilson".
442 Given name is written as "Fre" followed by a superscripted "d", probably implying
"Frederick", thought the usual abbreviation for "Frederick" is "Fred'k".
455 Surname is "Reed" or "Reid".
464 Given name is difficult to decipher but is probably "Benj" or something similar.
468 The entry in the Sex column is "Inf't". The sex of the infant was not recorded.
472 Both first and middle initials are difficult to decipher. The first initial might
possibly be "T" whereas the middle initial is more unreadable but also possibly "T".
473 Calling is difficult to decipher. First letter appears to be "P" or "C" followed
by "o". The next letters appear to be either "b" or "li" followed by "ce".
Calling is possibly though not definitely "Police".
475 First and middle names have been written as "Tho's Ja's" with superscripted "s"
in both names. These are commonly used abbriviations for "Thomas" and "James".
480 Given name is written a "E" followed by a superscripted "d", possibly implying
the name "Edward", although Edward is usually abbriviated as "Edw'd".
486 Given name is written as "Hy" which is a commonly used abbriviation for "Henry".
488 Given name is written as "Ge" followed by a superscripted letter which is not
readable. Perhaps this is meant to be "Geo'e", an abbriviation for "George".
489 "M's" appears to be written in place of the given name perhaps implying "Mrs.".
If there is an entry "Wife" written in the Calling column, it is not visible.
493 Calling is difficult to read because the manifest has been torn at this spot and
the last half of the word is missing. Calling might possibly be "Traveller".
494 Given name is written as "Hy" which is a commonly used abbriviation for "Henry".
495 Initial of given name might be "T".
497 Initial of given name might possibly be "H" or "W".
498 Initial of given name might possibly be "D", or less likely "T".
502 Last letter of surname is very faint but is possibly "r", resulting in "Cutlar"
or perhaps "Cutler".
510 Calling is clearly "House" followed by another word that is unreadable because
the manifest is damaged in this spot. Perhaps Calling is "House Wife" or
"House Maid".
515 Given name is written as "Ge" followed by a superscripted letter which is not
readable. Perhaps this is meant to be "Geo'e", an abbriviation for "George".
527 Middle initial is possibly "F" or "J".
531 Given name is written as "Ma" followed by a superscripted "t". Perhaps this is
meant to be "Mar't" or "Marg't" which are common abbriviations for "Margaret".
533 Numbers "16-11" were recorded after the Calling column. The numbers are noted
here as they may be pertinent to researchers in the future, even though their
significance is unknown at this time.
Historical Note
This ship was built in 1881 as the "Asiatic" for the White Star Line. She was a 4,368 gross ton ship, length 427.8 ft, with one funnel, four masts rigged for sail, a single screw and a speed of 13 knots. Before she was put into service, the ship's name was changed to "Arabic" and she left Liverpool on her maiden voyage to New York on 10 September 1881. In 1890, the ship was sold to Holland America Line, renamed "Spaarndam" and she sailed the Rotterdam to New York route until she was scrapped in 1901.
These are my relatives from Shropshire, England, who ran a shop in Shrewsbury in 1881.
The parents, passengers #477 and #478, John Cooke Chester and Elizabeth Bates Chester,
were reasonably successful shopkeepers and bakers. Their four sons: passengers #483
John Hough Chester (Hough was a family name), #484 George Chester, #485 Arthur F. Chester,
and #486 Henry Chester, were all well educated and unmarried. Due to one of the brothers
reputedly not being happy with life in the U.S.A., the family returned to the UK (possibly
in 1888 as they were found in the 1891 UK Census). I am interested in linking up with
descendants of the ship’s other passengers. In particular, we are trying to identify a
young woman in a family photograph taken while in Chicago.
