Correspondence 08/31/2004 passengers 420 & 421 Turchanyj
Turchanyi. It is spelled with an i at the end and not a j.
There were other members of the same family on the ship. Namely Evi
and Ilus, who were my sisters, plus my father and mother whose names are
Gyula and Edit.
It is stated that the port of departure was unknown.
The ship left the German Port called Bremen Hafen.

Correspondence from passenger #43 Eva CERNY April 22, 2008
From:evacerny1 at juno.com
Dear Sir, the SS General Hersey sailed out of Bremenhaven, Germany, on
Oct 10, 1950. There were many more people on that ship than you have
listed here. In addition to the displaced persons from Eastern Europe,
there was a number of Italians from Italy, who joined the ship at Bremen
haven. The West Australian government might have the whole list.
Sincerely, an ex-passenger.
Additional Correspondence from Eva CERNY April 25, 2008
Dear Sir, first of all, I got the date of departure wrong. it was
actually the 9th of October, 1950. A very gray day, a very gray evening.
The lights of Bremenhaven lit up, our ship blew its horn twice, and we
started to move away from Europe. Many thought this was a good thing, even
though few thought they'd ever see Europe again. Everyone thought there
was another war on the way, and everyone wanted to be out of it. We lost
our captain by the English shore, he left in a small boat. My sister says
he was very handsome, I don't know, I didn't see him, I just saw the boat
bobbing away on the waves, and I must say I did not like losing our
captain so soon out in the voyage. By then we were all very sea-sick, as
the channel was very choppy. Since I was a small child at that time, I
cannot adequately describe the rest of the voyage. However my father left
behind some letters, which I happened to get a hold of, and which
describes some of the voyage. It lasted a long time (we actually got
admitted to Australia on the third of November), there were many of us,
mostly refugees from Stalin, but there were a few Italian immigrants
sprinkled among us. Incidentally, "men" from the age of three years
upwards, were accomodated on one part of the ship, the women on the
other. My 7 year old brother was with my father, my sister and I with my
mother. It seems a little funny today, but my mother did not like it.
However we ended up staying on the deck most of the time, including the
nights. And for us little kids, it wasn't too bad, we got to see
everything on the boat, including the engine room, and by the time we
struck the storm in the Indian Ocean, we could enjoy the spectacle of the
trays flying of the table when it got really bumpy. We enjoyed it. (I
think children can enjoy anything). By the time we got to Fremantle, I
was actually a little sad to leave the boat which had been our home for
so many days. It would be interesting to know how many people actually
stayed in Australia for good, I know the Czechs who stayed are the ones
who left West Australia for Sydney or Melbourne soon after we arrived.
But that again is something the Australian government would have to
figure out. Hope this fills up some of the blanks.
Sincerely, E.Cerny.
