Belgian SS Pennland
I, F. Loesewitz, Master of the Belgian S. S. "Pennland" do solemnly, sincerely and truly swear that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of Customs of the City of of New York, is a full and perfect list of all the Passengers taken on board said vessel at Antwerp from which port or ports the said vessel has now arrived; and that on said List is truly designated the age, sex, calling, ability to read and^or write, country of citizenship, native country, last residence, whether citizens of the United States or not, the location of the compartment or space occupied, the intended destination or location, State or Territory, the number of pieces of baggage, and the date and cause of death of any such passengers who may have died on the voyage; also the port of embarkation, and a statement as far as it can be ascertained with reference to the intention of each immigrant passenger as to a protracted sojourn in this Country, as required by "The Passenger Act of 1882" and Regulations of the Secretary of the Treasury; So help me God.

All passengers departed from Antwerp so that column was eliminated. No deaths were recorded on this voyage so that column was eliminated. All Steerage Passengers intended a Protracted Sojourn in the U.S. so that column was eliminated.

Personal Notes:
Don Schmalbeck, ISTG Research Coordinator, was pleased to find his great-grandfather aboard. He is passenger #106, Johann Scherer. Johann's wife Barbara Maas Scherer and their daughter Ermine arrived on the La Champagne from Havre later that summer, 7 Aug 1893. It is not known how long Johann remained in Pittsburg(h), as the family settled in Chicago as listed on the manifest of the La Champagne and other sources. Johann (John) and Barbara had 4 children, along with Ermine (Henning), born in Germany were Catherine (Keil), John Scherer, and Don's grandmother, Elizabeth (Strecker) born in Chicago. Johann was a laborer & foreman and died in Chicago 31 Jan 1908, and is buried in St. Boniface Cemetery in Chicago beside Barbara, his widow.
