I R C Culting (unsure of name) Master of the Ship John Bright do solemnly, sincerely and truly swear that the following List or Manifest subscribed by me and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of New York is a full and perfect list of all passengers taken on board of the said ship at Liverpool from which said ship has now arrived and that on said list is truly designated the age, the sex, and the occupation of each of said passengers, the part of the vessel occupied by each during the passage, the country to which each belongs, and also the country of which it is intended by each to become an inhabitant and that said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of said passengers who have died on said voyage and the names and ages of those who died.

It is clear that many of the names have been written as they sounded. Scribe
may not have been familiar with Irish names. Difficult to make clear
distinction between vowels due to handwriting.

The SMART Family, passengers 256-262, are my connection. They are my maternal
grandparents. They settled in Ironton, Ohio. My ancestors were Joseph Smart
and Mary Ann Berry. They were from England and we think they may have come
from the Sheffield area.

Passengers 211 and 212 are my great great grandparents.
# 211: Joseph WOOD (1831-1926), the son of William WOOD and Amelia
BERRY, was born in the Castle Hill area of Shepley, near Huddersfield,
Yorkshire, England. When he arrived in America, he went to Mt
Pleasant, Green Co, Wisconsin, where his wife’s maternal uncle, Eli
Holden, Jr, was farming. In 1862, Joseph and his family settled in
Monroe, Green Co, Wisconsin, where he was a successful businessman and
known as a lover of music.
# 212: Amelia GARLICK WOOD (1833-1899) was the daughter of John
Garlick and Hannah Holden.
She was born and raised in Shepley by her maternal grandfather, Eli
HOLDEN.
Joseph and Amelia WOOD’s children were:
Amelia, born 1857, died 1944, married Charles Boardman CHURCHILL
William Ellery, born 1860, died 1939
Flora Hannah, b 1862, died 1938
Lettie Elizabeth, born 1868, died 1935, married William Wilberforce
CHURCHILL.
Traveling with them were #208-210, Valentine Senior and two of his
children. Valentine’s deceased wife, Ann Berry Senior (born 1801), was
Joseph Wood’s maternal aunt.
#208: Valentine Senior, born 1798 in Yorkshire, died 1874 in Cerro
Gordo County, Iowa.
#209: Clemey Senior, his daughter, 1827-1900, married B Sutton in Iowa.
#210: Charles Berry Senior, his son, born Dec1844, lived in Mason
City, Iowa.
Valentine Senior and his children went to Cerro Gordo County, Iowa, to
join his oldest son, Henry Senior, who emigrated in 1850 with Eli Holden, Jr.
