Correspondence 03/28/2003 passengers 62-64 GUST
I am the gr-gr-gr-granddaughter of Martin and Sophia GUST,
gr-gr-granddaughter of Martin GUST Jr., (aka Friederich GUST).
They arrived from Prussia aboard the ship ECHO, arriving in
New York on September 19, 1839. (Passengers # 62, 63, and
64, as transcribed). They traveled with a group of other "Old
Lutherans" to the Milwaukee area.

I knew of their arrival ship, but had not seen a transcription of the
passenger list until I found it on the net while doing a Google search
of the name "Martin Gust".

Martin Jr. later married and moved to Oshkosh, where my
great-grandfather, Emil GUST was born, and his son, Elmer GUST, and his
son Robert B. GUST, my father. Christie Gust Cook

Correspondence added 01/04/2006, passengers 172-178 ROTHER
This family was part of Pastor GRABAU's group and settled in Buffalo, NY. Some
later went to Humberstone, Ontario, Wisconsin and Minnesota. I have done
considerable research on this family and would be happy to
correspond with other researchers working on this family.

Personal Note from Transcriber:
Passenger #144, the Reverand Grabau led a group of about 1000 "Old Lutherans"
emigrating from Prussia in protest of the State church. They left Hamburg in
canal boats and crossed the English Channel to Hull, England. They then moved
overland to Liverpool where they boarded five ships, the Georgiana, Alfred,
Republic, Britannia, and Echo, and sailed to New York arriving in September
1839.(The ship passenger lists are transcribed in Volume 5) They proceeded up
the Hudson River by steamboat-pulled barges and along the Erie Canal to Buffalo,
New York. About 40 families travelled on to Wisconsin and founded the community
of Freistadt. The rest founded the German Lutheran Church with Rev. Grabau as
pastor and erected Trinity Old Lutheran Church in Buffalo. The Wisconsin and
New York congregations later organized the Buffalo Synod of the Lutheran Church
with Pastor Grabau as president. Pastor Grabau was assisted in the emigration
by Heinrick von Rohr, a former Prussian Army captain. Von Rohr later attended
the Buffalo Synod Seminary and became pastor to the congregations in western
New York. He arrived on the ship Franklin in Philadelphia on 19 August 1839.
(Passenger list transcribed in Volume 4)

Correspondence added 14 July 2008, passengers 93-97, BEVERSDORF
The Beversdorf family is part of the "old Lutheran" immigration from Pommern to
America. The family members are:
#93 Johann David BEVERSDORF born in Rugenwalde, Kreis Schlawe, Pommern, Kingdom of Prussia.
#94 Wilhelmine Caroline Charlotte BEVERSDORF, nee WERGIN born in Warnow, KreisUsedom-Wollin,
Pommern, Kingdom of Prussia. Johann David is her second husband, her first was
Michael Friedrich RIEMER who died about 1829.
#95 Carl Friedrich Wilhelm RIEMER born 26 December 1820 Warnow, Kreis Usedom-Wollin,
     Pommern, Kingdom of Prussia.
#96 Ernst Friedrich Ludwig RIEMER born 3 December 1823 in Warnow, Kreis Usedom-Wollin,
     Pommern, Kingdom of Prussia.
#97 Hanna Charlotta Wilhelmine BEVERSDORF, born 17 July 1834 in Warnow, Keris Usedom-Wollin,
     Pommern, Kingdom of Prussia.

The family settled in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The were members of Pastor Krause's Milwaukee
congregation. In 1843, Johann David was elected a church elder for the Milwaukee part of Krause's
congregation. He was a carpenter by trade and with two others built the Lutheran Church in
Milwaukee in 1844; a wood building 40 ft long x 26 ft wide x 10 ft high. The family left Krause's
congregation (Buffalo Synod) in 1847 and joined the Trinity Lutheran Church (Missouri Synod).
I will be happy to share additional details with other researchers. Tom

The National Archives microfilmed manifest for this ship is not a microfilm of the original manifest but rather a hand copy of the original list. The National Archives substituted a copy because the original was missing or was illegible. This may have introduced an additional source of transcription errors.
