Correspondence September 18, 2001 passengers Peacock - APPEARS TO BE AN ERROR, PLEASE SEE CORRESPONDENCES BELOW Edward Peacock was from England. He was an engineer in South Africa, and caught malaria and was advised to move to a hot, dry climate for his health. He chose Arizona. The lady was his daughter Emma or maybe Emmaline. (anonymous) Correspondence October 10, 2001 passengers Peacock Elizabeth Peacock was traveling on the Lusitania with her 17 year old son Thomas Edward Peacock who was named after her husband. Both survived and resettled in the United States. Elizabeth's son Thomas became a U.S. Citizen, attended the University of Arizona, and eventually became the General Manager of Trenton (NJ) Transit. He died around 1968 in Trenton survived by sons Thomas and Robert in greater Philadelphia and Los Angeles, and wife Ruby Seaver. Mrs. Elizabeth Peacock continued to live in Prescott until moving with her daughter Winnifred to the California cities of Riverside and Corona. Winnifred and her husband Jack Mahony died in the early 1990's in La Jolla, California. Eric Peacock Correspondence June 28, 2002 passengers Peacock I noticed that there was an anonymous entry for: Correspondence 09/18/01 passengers Peacock That entry is in error. The second entry from Eric Peacock is correct. The 2 passengers were Elizabeth Peacock and her 17 year old son, Thomas Edward Peacock. I am the granddaughter of Thomas Edward Peacock. Eric Peacock, who submitted the second entry is my brother. Our family has several newspaper articles from the Liverpool papers. My great-grandmother was about to board a life boat on the wrong side of the ship, when my grandfather took her to the other side of the ship to another lifeboat. My grandfather did not get on a lifeboat, he jumped. He was pulled under water when the boat sunk, but a large burst of air from the ship took him back up to the surface where he eventually was able to get into a lifeboat. Betty Peacock Davlin Correspondence April 20, 2002 passenger McConnell see story below Dick Barton LANCASHIRE SPINNER'S EXPERIENCE. Under The Sea And Back Again. From "Manchester Guardian," Monday, May 10th 1915. Mr J.W.McConnel, the well-known cotton spinner, and a vice-president of the Fine Cotton Spinners' and Doublers' Association, was a passenger on the Lusitania and had a narrow escape. Mr McConnel arrived in Manchester from Holyhead early yesterday morning. The account which he has given to a representative of the "Manchester Guardian" of what happened when the Lusitania went down, and of his own strange experience, will be read with especial interest. Just after two o'clock, English time, Friday, after lunching and addressing a couple of letters, I came out of the café‚ at the stern end of A deck (the top). Ireland was in sight, as it had been for hours. I was walking forward to see from some place clear of boats whereabouts we were when I heard the crack - a sharp crack, accompanied by a great blast of dust and dirt, near or in the forward or second funnel. My first thought was that I was at a play when the crisis had come, my second that it was an infernal machine, not a torpedo. Then I saw all the people forward running to the main entrance, and down came a sweep of dirty water - more than rain, but not buckets full. At once I started forward through the lounge to the companion. No lifts were working. The stairs were crowded with people, mostly coming up, and all behaving very well. I got down gradually to my cabin on D deck, where I put on my life-saving waistcoat, snatched some papers and a flask, and, taking another lifebelt, went up on B deck. There I gave my spare belt to a young lady, and finding a boat grinding down from A past the openings on B, I shoved as hard as I could to clear it. I think the young lady got into the boat. As the gunwale reached our ledge the stern ropes were let go, and the boat fell endways to the water. Then the other falls were dropped, and she seemed all right except that half-a-dozen or a dozen of her crowd were in the water. Then I went up to A. An officer told me there was plenty of time and the ship was not sinking; but the list, which. by-the-way, began at the very first second, became rapidly worse. I crossed to the starboard. There two, or perhaps three, boats were ready and stewards calling for passengers - "Ladies first." Many got in, but some ladies would not leave their husbands. Almost instantly the boats were in the water and the edge of A deck level with them, a drop, I believe, of 60 feet. I jumped over a rope entanglement into the last boat, which was full. Then as we tried to clear the sling ropes, now being pulled down by the davits, I suddenly found myself sitting in the water. All my knowledge of my neighbours ceased. A funnel came sweeping down a few feet to the left; then something closed over me and I went down and down and down. Then it cleared, and I got up to the top, but mighty forces were swirling everything about, and again something quite enormous covered me and I was driven down, I don't know how far, but I thought all hope was gone, and curiously, my great regret was that I should not know what America would say. Then up again, and great as had been the distance down, the rise was very quick. Of course I had sucked in quantities of sea-water, not noticeably unpleasant. As I saw again the blessed thinning of the waters, I sprang out into the glorious sun. And at that moment, as it seemed to me, all the turmoil ceased like magic. No ship was there, of course, but bright clear water, with boats here and there, sadly few right side up, wreckage everywhere, and a few people bobbing about like myself. I was struck even then with the immense area the wreckage and survivors covered. As a matter of explanation, I am told that after the ship had disappeared an immense wave boiled up owing to an explosion, which threw us apart. There was certainly no suck-down after the ship. Then the next part began - getting to some sort of safety. I got first one thing, then another, and soon the corner of a big deck chest, which was covered with canvas, where one could get one's fingers into the joints. Another man and a woman shared it - perhaps others. The nearest, indeed the only refuge, was a boat upside down, with a steward or two looking as smart and nice as usual except for their cork jackets. They and another man collected an oar or two and poked their way round to us. We got the woman onto the boat; then the man left me, and I think he got on. Then they reached out the oars to me, and by their kind help I was hauled up. Another man got on afterwards, very done indeed - a fireman who had been, he said, to the bottom. We were about seven men, the woman, and a dead woman. Chapter III lasted, I suppose, three hours. We sat or, those who could, stood at times, and hoped for relief. My flask, I think, saved the woman and two men, and helped us all. The blessed sun made all the difference, and when not sick or shivering I had times when I thought that a row-boat the right way up might not be an unpleasant thing to be in. The worst feature was that we did not know if any "S.O.S." signal had been sent. The only thing in sight was a sailing boat, which did, in fact, save many, but which in that perfect calm was, of course, very slow. Boats able to row had all gone. Smoke appeared on the far horizon, east, I think. but it seems they never saw us, and it passed away; first one and then a second. Then at last came the smoke of the torpedo-boats, pushing from Queenstown. The second one took us off, and then plied round and round picking up other derelicts, many in far worse case than ourselves. For though the water at first was not so cold as I expected, it must have been awful to have been in it all the time, as many were, some in injured boats and some with nothing but bits of wreckage to cling to; and of course many were suffering from bodily injury as well, though I expect most of them died. One lady was picked out of a wicker chair in which she was sitting, with head back, unconcious. I think the only other personal incident is that I was as black as a collier, and my head plastered with black mud. This was not from the first blast, as I had my shooting hat on then. It must have been got in one of my diving trips, and makes me partly believe the story of two of my companions on the boat keel - viz., that they had gone down one of the funnels and had been blown out again. There was absolutely no panic anywhere near me. Everybody was considerate and quiet. And my companions on the boat-roof said the same of the second-class and steerage. JOHN W. McCONNEL. Correspondence July 27, 2002 passenger Leverich William Edward Leverich was married to Rosina Thomas Philips (One of their children was) ..... Rosina Philips Leverich was born in New Orleans and in 1915 she departed America, bound for England on the S.S. Lusitania. With her was her mother, Rosina T. P. Leverich. As history now bears witness, on the 7th May 1915, the ship was attacked by a German submarine and sank with great loss of life. Both mother and daughter perished. No trace of Rosina, the daughter, was ever found, but her mother's body was washed ashore in Ireland, where identification was made by William Edward, her son, who was already living in England. The entries for both mother and daughter in the Family Bible read " ... died 7th May 1915. Murdered by the Germans in the sinking of the S.S. Lusitania by torpedo." As a footnote, the body of Rosina Thomas Leverich was identified by a piece of jewelry she had hidden inside her whalebone corset for safety's sake by her son who had travelled to Ireland to identify his mother's body! Bill Mears Correspondence October 23, 2002 passenger/crew Wylie My Grandfather's brother-Great Uncle Richard Wylie left Paisley Scotland in 1914/15 for US/CAN and nobody heard from him again. I'm wondering if he was working on the Lusitania- R.G. Wylie listed as crew member (died) could be my uncle. If Cunard had no information on him they couldn't get in touch with the family.Carol Wheeler Correspondence March 9, 2003 passenger/crew French My great grand-father was a crew member who died on board, and is listed on your website. His name is Edward Stanley French, you do not have any details of were he was from, so if you are updating the web site you may wish to include that he was like many of the crew from Liverpool. I believe he was stoker and that his brother (J French) who was also a member of the crew died on board. Jan Tucker nee French Correspondence May 19, 2004 passenger Semple I live in Eaglesham, a village in Scotland. I came across a memorial headstone in the old village cemetary (Carswell Parish Church), many years ago and was reminded of it again when looking through the "immigrant ships" list online. It relates to the "Lusitania" passenger listed as "Semple. Mrs. A" The headstone reads as follows - "In memory of HUGH GILMOUR, farmer, Ballimore, Kilfinan died 20th June 1886, aged 42 years. His wife MARION MITCHELL STEWART died 28th Feb 1919 aged 58 years. Their son HUGH GILMOUR, farmer Ardoch, Eaglesham died 26th Feb 1919 aged 34 years. Their daughter AGNES GILMOUR SEMPLE and her baby boy, drowned in the Lusitania disaster, 7th May 1915 aged 29 years." Sadly there is no mention of her "baby boy" on the passenger list nor any mention of his age on the headstone. The headstone next to it lists, (I believe) her mothers family. Karin Nicholson Correspondence November 15, 2004 crew Mitchell (not listed on ISTG source) My grandfather was a Linen Steward on Lusitania when it went down in 1915 off Ireland. He was mentioned in a book called Attack the Lusitania by Raymond Hitchcock. He cut the lifeboats rope when it became stuck. His name was William Mitchell. He survived by swimming to Ireland...but unfortunately he died 8 months later of pneumonia, in Liverpool. My mother was born 4 months later. Her sister was 4 at the time. I have a ships crew and passenger list, 1 which has his name listed. Andrea Francis Correspondence January 10, 2005 passenger Taylor Harold & Lucy Taylor were on their honeymoon aboard the Lusitania when she was sunk. They were separated for 2 days neither knowing whether the other had survived. Lucy was put on lifeboat 11 by Harold who went down with the ship. He was one of the few who were shot to the surface and later was saved by a naval ship. They were reunited in Queenstown, where Lucy, scouring the town found Harold, dressed in seamens gear. They continued on to Manchester, Harold was later conscripted into the British army and seved in France till 1919. Both returned to Niagara Falls, NY after the war with their daughter Marjorie Lusitania Taylor. Harold W. Taylor Correspondence April 17, 2005 passenger/crew Brenman/Brennan Crewman Brenman, T. should in fact be Thomas Brennan. He was my great uncle and a fireman (stoker) aboard the ship. He survived by clinging to wreckage for several hours. It was a week before the family discovered that he had survived and had been taken to (I think) Cork. Family legend has it that Vanderbilt was in difficulties in the water nearby and offered his fortune in exchange for help, but Tommy was in no condition to help. Tommy was left with two permanently paralysed fingers as a result of the sinking. I remember meeting him when I was a kid in the early 70's so he must have lived into his eighties. Steve Foster

Correspondence added May 9, 2007 Dear Madame or Sir, While using the surname search facility I discovered that the surname of my ancestor, Theodore Diamandis, has been mispelled. As you see below, he is listed as DIAMONDIS, Theodore. The correct surname is DIAMANDIS. Thank you. Yours, Dr G Langley England Correspondence added July 31, 2007 passenger Michael Chester I would like you to know Michael Chester 47 was a fireman (stoker) on the ship and was from Liverpool. The information I have are from family records as Michael Chester is my Great Granddad. Andrew Webster BEng MBCS CNA
