Transcriber's Notes: The SS Laurentic arrived in Quebec, Que. June, 11, 1909. This passenger list has 16 coloumns. The immigration officer has stamped a lot of information in the list, therefore the list is done in paragraph form for ease of transcribing the added information. Each page on the manifest starts with passenger number 1, passengers have been numbered consecutively by the transcriber. List of Races will be found on black sheet printed at the end of the first page. At the top of each page the following is printed: INSTRUCTIONS TO PURSER. - Each passenger should be given a card indicating the number of sheet and line on sheet his name is to be found on. Since Quebec is a province and Montreal is in Quebec, this could be Quebec city. This could also be true for passengers where the final destination is Quebec. The SS Laurentic belonged to the White Star Line and White Star Dominion Line. No births or deaths were reported during this voyage. Religious affiliations: C of E is probably Church of England, Presb. could be Presbyterian, Rom.Cat. is possibly Roman Catholic. The religious affiliation of each passengers is stamped in the "births" and "deaths" coloumns and has been added to each passenger by the transcriber. An * shows that there is a note in the transcriber's notes at the end of the list of names. A ^ shows that the following letter was superscripted. The name of the Canadian Province in brackets after the ultimate destination was written by the transcriber, all other names of provinces are on the manifest. C.P.R. stands for Canadian Pacific Railway, G.T.R. stands for Grand Trunk Railway (which was incorporated into the Canadian National Railway systems in about 1921). This is the mode of transportation to the final destination. Canadian Provinces: Ab (Alt)is Alberta, BC is British Columbia, Man is Manitoba, Ont is Ontario, Sask is Sasketchewan, Que.is Quebec, NWT is North West Territories, Nfld is New Foundland, PEI is Prince Edward Island, NS is Nova Scotia. Passenger Notes: general - the u and n are very similar on this manifest and could be interchangeable. Very often a capital W appears like an N. The names beginning with Mc are listed with the c written after but above the M. 2: the date May 1, 11 is written above British Bonus deducted 5: the last name is written as B only 10: ink is over the second number of the age 11: the W in the married or single coloumn probably means widowed 13: Port Arthur is now called Thunder Bay 15-17: they have the same contract ticket number since they are travelling together 25: the first part of the contract ticket number cannot be read 32: the coal mining town of Frank does not exist anymore. On April 29, 1903 at 4:10 am a rock slide destroyed three quarters of the town in 100 seconds. It is now called Frank slide, a museum and interpretive center is open to the public, as is a short part of the mine 33: Olds Alber is written above Quebec in the final destination 45-46: these two passengers have the same contract ticket number as they are travelling together 49-51: these three passengers have the same contract ticket number as they are travelling together 52: only Far can be read from the stamp, it is probably Far Lab 59: the last three letters of the last name are covered by the stamp and cannot be read 60: ditto marks show that this passenger has the same last name as passenger 59

RMS (SS) LAURENTIC

Laid down at Harland and Wolff, Belfast, as Dominion Line's Alberta, this ship was transferred to White Star during construction and was launched in 1908 as Laurentic. Laurentic and her sister Megantic were used by their owner and their builder as an experiment. Although otherwise identical, they were outfitted with different propulsion systems. Megantic had a conventional arrangement of twin screws powered by quadruple expansion engines, while Laurentic was given a novel triple screw system, with triple expansion engines powering the wing propellers and exhausting into a low pressure turbine linked to the center propeller. Laurentic's arrangement proved to be both faster and more economical. As a result, that system was chosen for use in White Star's Olympic-class liners.

Laurentic served on only one route, Liverpool-Canada, during her White Star career, which began with a Liverpool-Montréal voyage on 29 April 1909. (Her running mates were Megantic and Dominion Line's Canada and Dominion. Together they provided a weekly service to Montréal in summer and Halifax or, occasionally, Portland in winter.) In Montréal when World War I began, Laurentic was immediately commissioned as a troop transport for the Canadian Expeditionary Force. After conversion to armed merchant cruiser service in 1915, she sank off the northern coast of Ireland on 25 January 1917, less than an hour after striking two mines. Laurentic's sinking accounted for the largest loss of life ever in a mining: only 121 of the 475 aboard survived.

But the story of Laurentic doesn't end there. Many sunken ships are the subject of rumors about treasure being on board, but Laurentic is one of the relatively few cases where there actually was treasure. In addition to her passengers and crew, the ship was carrying about 3,200 bars of gold worth £5 million ($25 million). In what Anderson describes as "[o]ne of the world's most amazing salvage operations," Royal Navy divers made some 5,000 dives to the wreck between 1917 and 1924. At a cost of only £128,000 ($640,000), they succeeded in recovering all but about 25 of the bars. The Royal Navy returned to the site in 1952 to recover the rest. [However stated in the source material, correspondence from the owner of the Laurentic would indicate the last statement is untrue.

From an email dated July 19, 2007:

My name is Des Cossum. I am the owner of the wreck of the SS Laurentic 1908 -1917 I enjoyed reading the passenger lists Ref ISTG Vol 4.

I would like to draw your attention to the last page of the article. Your reseacher writes that the Royal Navy returned to the wrecksite in 1952 and recovered the remainder of the gold. This is an error.

The RN finished opperations in 1924 and never returned. In 1932 the Mallet Salvage Company returned and salvaged a further 5 bars of gold. Twenty bars still reamain unacounted for.

My father Ray Cossum has researched the Laurentic and has written a book on the subject. I hope this helps, Des Cossum

For those interested, the name of the book is We Own Laurentic, by Jack Scultock & Ray Cossum. It is available at Impact Publishers.
