Transcriber's Notes:
The use of an * indicates an omission or error made by the original recorder
and/or further information/explanations in the Transcriber's Notes.
The use of a ? indicates a word or letters that could not be read, due to the
quality of the original document.
The recorder of this manifest did not consistently place a period after initials.
This recorder's lowercase "i" and "e" are frequently indistinguishable from
one another; also his lowercase "j" & "g" and sometimes "y".
Passenger Notes:
1: Notation, in a different hand, overlapping columns 10 & 11, appears to
be the initials, "SND" and underneath these initials, "by WLC". Meaning
unknown.
2: Surname looks like Garmell but may be Gunnell. Possibly related to
Passenger 3.
5: Ink faded in areas. Name possibly Horton. Form and spacing of letters
very like surname of Passenger 196--Horten.
21: Ink faded, surname could be Fraser.
25: Surname could be Mellens.
29: Surname could be Reddeg, Reddey, or Riddey.
39: Surname possibly Strachan or Streetan.
54: First ? may be a letter or just a squiggle in the line, second ? looks
like a "t", thus Sturia?th.
55-56: Surname possibly Barley.
57-63: Surname recorded with two final l's for passenger 57 and with one
final l for every other member of this family.
69-72: This appears to be one family but each time the surname is written it
is different. 69 looks like Nie or Nic, 70 is clearly Nice, 71 looks
like Mee (first letter appears to have been changed from N to M), 72 is
very clearly Mee.
77: Given name looks like Alpid but could, conceivably, be Alfred
83: Last letters of given name overwritten but name appears to be Christie.
84: Name very clearly written as Stillivan, with the "t" tall and crossed,
but there appears to be some overwriting of the "t" and "i", as if the
recorder may have attempted to change the name to Sullivan.
86: Given name could be Janus.
92: Given name could be Thos.
99: Surname possibly McManne or McMaune.
103: On the manifest the uppercase "O" and "B" are connected, with no apostrophe
in between.
119: Surname possibly Huney.
120: Given name looks like Marta, could be Martie, less likely Martin; listed as
female with laborer as calling. One of these undoubtedly an error.
129: Surname could be McInghgart, McInghgait, McInghjart, or McInghjait.
139: Surname could be OLoni. On the manifest the uppercase "O" and "L" are
connected with no apostrophe in between.
141: On the manifest the uppercase "O" and "D" are connected with no apostrophe
in between.
172: Occupation "Pavior" possibly should be "Paviour"(paver).
173: Given name possibly Margie as this recorder's "j" and "g" frequently
indistinguishable from one another.
181: Surname possibly Ostrossen.
192: Surname possibly Flitnomila
193: Surname possibly Friman or, less likely, Fremar.
195: Surname possibly Gadi.
198: First ? "n" or "u", second ? "d" or "t", thus Hildenterante, Hildenterande,
Hildenteraute, Hildenteraude, are possibilities.
199: Surname possibly Hansinkrela, Hansinkarla, Hansenkaila, Haminkaila or
Hanunkaila.
207: Occupation possibly should be "Stonemason", though, clearly, there is no
"t" in the word on the manifest.
208: Surname possibly Lidtick.
210: Intended destination listed as only as Dakota without North or South
designation. [Note: North and South Dakota had become the 39th and 40th
states, respectively, on 2 November 1889, only 7 months prior to this
voyage.]
212: Surname possibly Merthy.
214: Surname possibly Makand.
215: Given name looks like ?yerd or ?yers; first letter similar to an "L" or
an "S" but unlike this recorders other "L's" or "S's".
217: Given name looks like Pehr or Pet?r, possibly should be Peter.
228 & 230: Surname transcribed as recorded but possibly should be Soderqvist.
229: Surname could be Santgvist; "g" possibly should be a "q", thus Sandqvist
or Santqvist.
231: Surname possibly Venian.
234: Surname possibly Andriason.
239: Intended destination (see explanation Passenger 210).
242: Intended destination (see explanation Passenger 210).
Every effort has been made to produce an accurate transcription of this manifest.
However, errors in interpretation are possible due to the quality of the copy and
the variations in individual handwriting, together with unfamiliar names. If you
