Ship O. Thyen*
I, C. H. Addicks do solemnly, sincerely, and truly swear that the following List or Manifest of Passengers, subscribed with my name, and now delivered by me to the Collector of Customs for the District of New York, contains to the best of my knowledge and belief, a just and true account of all the Passengers received on board the O. Thyen, whereof I am Master, from --------, to the 23 June 1854.
before me, (signed) J. A. O?????
So help me God, (signed) C. H. Addicks
LIST or MANIFEST of all PASSENGERS taken on board the O. Thyen whereof C. H. Addicks is Master, from Bremen burthen 800 tons.
The columns are labelled as follows: "Names", "Age", "Sex", "Occupation", "The country to which they severally belong", "The country to which they intend to become inhabitants", and "Died on the voyage". For all passengers the country to which they belong is Germany and the country to which they intend to become inhabitants is United States. Therefore these two columns were omitted from the transcription.
Infants are listed to the right of the mother's entry just as they were listed on the manifest.
Refer to the transcribers notes for individuals marked with a star or asterisk "*" character.

Correspondence added 12 March 2007, passengers 271-280, BODE FAMILY
August (#271) and Wilhelm (#280) Bode were brothers. August was my great-great grandfather,
born in 1815. They were from the small town of Hajen-on-the-Wesser-River near Hameln, Hanover
and sailed from Bremen on the Ship O. Thyen (an Oldenburgh Ship) to New York arriving on 23 June 1854.
They left an elder brother (Freidrich) to look after the parents who remained behind. According
to the Application for Naturalization Records of Allen County, Indiana, 1844-1906 (Book 2, page 82),
they arrived in New York on 15 June 1854 (an obvious error) and August declared for citizenship on
10 July 1854. From New York they traveled on the inland water route via the Great Lakes to the Maumee
River and finally disembarked in Fort Wayne, IN. From there they traveled overland a short distance
to a northern "suburb" of Fort Wayne, St. Joseph Township, IN where they participated in land grants,
homesteaded and began farming. They were founding members of St. Peter Lutheran Church which was
begun the following year.
I have only recently become acquainted with the German descendants of the brother who stayed behimd.
Some family members still reside in the town of Hajen, even in the same house wherein the above emigrants
were born. They have shared with me an actual copy of a letter written in 1874 by my g-g-grandfather to
the remaining brother. I would be pleased to provide anything further to interested persons.Donn E. Bohde
