Some background information on James and Sophia Brenchley. James Brenchley was born in 1812 in England,
the illegitimate son of Hannah Brenchley (1791-) and died in 1884 in Sullivan County, PA, USA. He is
buried in West Hills Cemetery, Shunk, Pennsylvania.
He married (1) Ann Sophia Augusta Powell (born about 1817 in Westwell, Kent and died in 1844 in
Sullivan County, Pennsylvania) on 6 May 1834 at the Westwell Parish Church. She married by consent
of her parents ("she being a minor") following the ususal publication of the Banns. Neither James,
his bride, nor the two witnesses, John Castle and Sarah Morgan, could write, so the marriage register
is signed with each of their marks.
James and Sophia left London on the Barque Neptune captained by Robert Hill and arrived in New York
on Tuesday 26 May 1835. They were listed as man and wife. James' age was given as 23 and Sophia's
as 20. They were supposedly bound for upper Canada, but ended up in Sullivan County, Pennsylvania.
Children of James and Sophia are:
George W. Brenchley, born 1841 and dies 1923.
Sophia Brenchley, born March 1844.
It is possible, though I've no proof at the moment that Sophia died in childbirth in 1844; her
last child being born in March 1844 and James remarrying in August. He married Hanna Hoagland
on 14 August 1844. She was the daughter of Joseph Hoagland and Hannah Mullen, born 2 February 1818
in Fox Twp, Sullivan County, Pennsylvania, USA.
Children of James Brenchley and Hannah Hoagland are:
Solomon Brenchley, b. 1845
Chester Brenchlye, b. 1846
Susannah Brenchley, b. 1848; d. 1 December 1867.
Alice Brenchley, b. aft. 1850.
James, Hannah and family are listed in the 1850 Pennsylvania Census for Sullivan County; reel #798, page #306B,
Reference: August 15, 1850, Fox Township. They are listed as: James, 37; Hannah, 32; John, 12; Soloman, 4;
Chester, 3; and Susanah, 1. Bob Brenchley, Gloucester, UK
National Archives and Records Administration, M237, Reel 26, List 300.
