Remarks
All particulars in this list are in accordance with what the Emigrants themselves
have stated before me to be true and correct. Those names underlined with Black
are persons dead on the voyage and those underlined with Red born on the voyage.
"Prostegjold" means pastorage and "Sogn" District.
(Signed) D. W. Oltmann
Transcriber's Notes:
Thanks go to Sheila Jensen Tate of ISTG for her advice and assistance with
this list.
The Musca and another ship, the Beta, carried Norwegians who had signed on to work on
the sugar plantations in Hawaii. However, this did not work out, and most of the
Norwegian immmigrants eventually left Hawaii, and moved on to parts of the
United States mainland. See below Hawaii
Prostegjold spelled as found but should be Præstegjæld.
Drammen spelled once as Drammun on the original, but all other times as Drammen.
Some origins in Sweden were indicated by Sw or Swd on the original.
There are a few discrepancies, mostly minor, between this transcription and the
one found at Riksarkivaren, the National Archives of Norway, due probably to their
list coming from a copy that was not entirely legible. The differences are
noted in these footnotes. The Norwegian Archives can be found at Riksarkivaren.
Click on "other sources" then "Emigrants" then "ship lists" to find the
Musca at their site.
#2 surname Tronoos as found, but spelled correctly in Norwegian at Riksarkivaren
as Tronæss.
#9 her middle name was Caroline on original, though on the transcription at the
Norwegian Archives it was listed as Pauline.
#37 Blakjier spelled as found, but should be Blakjær.
#38 on the original, her middle name seems to be spelled Jonette, but the
transcription at the Norwegian Archives lists it as Janette.
#44 first name looks like Gullorna on original, but the Norwegian Archives has it
as Gullovna.
#45 some damage around the first name, uncertain if the name is spelled Han
or Hans.
#66 his name definitely as found here, Oluf Chr. Jensen, though at Norwegian
Archives his name is transcribed as Oluf Christensen.
#106 his birth place looks like Foden Annex, though the Norwegian Archives have it
as Toden Annex, which is probably correct.
#149 first name definitely Thorvald, though at Norwegian Archives it is transcribed
as Harald.
#158 spelled Sigvart on original, Sigvard on transcription at Norwegian Archives.
#195 Nosseby as found, but should be spelled Næsseby.
#212 middle name was Frdk on original, but transcribed at Norwegian Archives
as Isak.
#214 middle name spelled Tycho on original, but transcribed at Norwegian Archives
as Tyche.
#234 birth place spelled Elfsbergs for this passenger, but Elfsborgs elsewhere.
#236 marked dead, and disappeared in "Valpariso" (spelled as found).
#238-239 these two passengers are marked "paid" in the area where others are
marked "dead". The Norwegian Archives have them marked as dead.
Uncertain which is correct.
#239 no age recorded for Dr. Kraft.

Hello,
In regards to the Norwegian emigration to Hawaii: There were about 600
Norwegians who emigrated to Hawaii, the main harbor for this organized
emigration was planned and executed by Hans L'Orange. L'Orange was
commissioned by the king of Hawaii (King Kalakaua) to bring the Norwegians
to the island. L'Orange was a Norwegian plantation owner in the islands.
The ships "Beta" and "Musca" were commissioned to bring the Norwegians over,
the ships sailed from Drammen harbour in the early 1880's. The Norwegians
were promised good work on the sugar plantations. They went mostly to the
island of Maui. However, when the Norwegians came they were shocked to find
out that the labor contract they had signed in Norway, which was written in
Norwegian was fundamentally different from the contract they were presented
in English on their arrival in the Hawaiian islands (at that time: The
sandwich islands).
The Norwegians had signed a four-year contract as plantation workers. This
experiment by having the Norwegians employed as plantation workers was not
successful enterprise. The plantation owners soon found out they could not
whip the Norwegians as they had previously done with the Asians. Soon,
strikes flourished and the jails were filled up with Norwegians.
The Norwegian emigration to Hawaii was a failure, as soon as their
four-years contract expired the majority of the Norwegians left for the US
mainland to places like California, Minnesota and the Dakotas; there were
only then a small number of Norwegians who remained in Hawaii.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Although the emigration to Hawaii was a failure, the Norwegians who stayed
left a lasting legacy. I have, in my 20 yrs living in Hawaii, met a number
of Chinese, Japanese and Polynesians who are immensely proud they have parts
of Norwegian ancestry (my own children are partly Japanese/Norwegians).
Regards,
Haakon Bjerke (living in Honolulu, Hawaii)
