Correspondence June 26, 2009 passengers #40-48 NANNINGA Family
The Nanninga family (passengers #40-48) came from the village of Manslagt, Ostfriesland, Germany.
The fathers name (passenger #40) is actually Reinder Heeren Nanninga and passenger #44 should be
Garrelt Nanninga. They ended up in Leonardsville, Kansas. The maiden name of Gelke Nanninga (passenger #41)
was Geelke Garrelts.
Tetje (passenger # 42) wrote a diary about the journey which has been preserved by the family and
a translation of it will be printed in the American-Ostfriesen Zeitung, a quarterly publication of the
OGSA (Ostfriesen Genealogical Society of America), probably in January of 2010. Tetje died shortly
after the family arrived in the U.S. Her death was attributed by the family to acute homesickness.
Reinder Nanninga had 78 grandchildren and 153 great-grandchildren when he died in 1895. Geelke died in 1900.
