A question mark (?) indicates indecipherable material.
An asterisk (*) indicates further information in these footnotes.

letters following it appear in superscript.
Passenger notes:
40-43 Surname has an umlaut over the "o" so may be spelled Stoeck.
46-49 Surname has an umlaut over the "o" so may be spelled Loewenau.
84-85 Surname has an umlaut over the "a" so may be spelled Naehring.
158-159 First letter of surname seems to be a "B" but a correspondent
(see below) indicates that it should be "Os" so the name would
be Ostrowsky.
221-223 These three passengers from Bohemia are the only ones not listed
as being from Prussia on the whole list.
226-229 Surname has an umlaut over the "o" so may be spelled Schroeder.
236-240 Surname has an umlaut over the "o" so may be spelled Voelz.
266-270 Surname has an umlaut over the "o" so may be spelled Roeschke.
372 First letter of surname is written over/corrected on original--

Correspondence 03/08/02 passengers #158 & 159 Btrowsky/Ostrowski
First of all I want to thank you a million times over for your unselfish
effort and the time you so generously donated in transcribbing the
passengers names on this ship Gutenberg manifest. I was thrilled to find the
information online. I wanted to draw attention to the correct spelling of
the following name as it most likely was difficult to desipher. The correct
spelling for the last name is OSTROWSKI. Mason, Santa Clara County, California
Correspondence 11/23/02 passengers #86-91 Lange
I thought I might give you a little more information on the Lange family
that traveled on the Gutenberg 16 May 1873.. They settled in Lake Co.,
Indiana...and even though Reinhold and Emilie are listed as Langes they
are in fact Theodore's step children and their last name was really Kroll
from Albertina's first marriage. Theodore and Albertina were my great great
grandparents. Carri Cole
