SS Gellert
I, Edmund Christian Kopff, Master of the S.S. Gellert, do solemnly, sincerely and truly swear that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of New York, is a full and perfect list of all the passengers taken on board of the said Gellert at Hamburg from which port said Gellert has now arrived; and that on said list is truly designated the age, the sex and the occupation of each of said passengers, the location of the compartments or space of the said vessel occupied by each during the passage, the country of citizenship of each, and also the destination or location intended by each, and that said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of said passengers who have died on said voyage, and the names and ages of those who died; also of the pieces of baggage of each, also a true statement so far as can be ascertained with reference to the intention of each alien passenger, as to a protracted sojourn in this country.
Sworn to this 7 July 1884, [signature is indecipherable]
So help me God, E Koppf, before me
List or Manifest Of ALL THE PASSENGERS taken on board the Gellert whereof E. C. Kopff is Master, from Hamburg, burthen 2350,53 tons
Columns represent: Passenger number, Names, Age (years, months), Gender, Occupation, Country of Citizenship, Intended Destination, Compartment Location/Space, Number of pieces of baggage, the country in which they intend to become inhabitants. The column for Intended Destination has been omitted in this transcription because all passengers are listed with the U.S. as their destination. A number of passengers were designated as "transient." These are cited at the end of this list in the transcriber's notes. Except for the final 18 passengers traveling in cabin, all others were travelling in steerage.

Transcriber's notes:
An asterisk (*) indicates a footnote for clarification or explanation.
A question mark (?) indicates letters that are difficult to decipher with
certainty.
A caret (^) indicates that the letters following are superscripted with the
name being abbreviated.
Upper Compartment has been abbreviated U.C.
Much of the original has a tear down the middle, often obliterating the entries
in the column for occupations, particularly for passengers numbered 1-125.
Passenger No:
3 A tear in the original has obliterated the information about her
status or occupation as well as the other columns. The surname begins
with N and it may be Niemann
4 A tear in the orignial has blurred the surname, there may be letters
after the final letter or the final letter may be "r" making the name
Preusser. The entry in the occupation column is likewise obliterated,
though the first letter seems to be a "w" perhaps for wife as is found
in numerous succeeding entries.
7 Surname seems to have an umlaut over the "u"
8 Citizen of Suevia must mean Sweden (because of the surname)
9 Surname has an umlaut over the "a"
20 Surname has an umlaut over the "a"
22 Surname could be Renger
23 Surname has an umlaut over the "u"
48-49 Surname has an umlaut over the "u"
60-62 Surname has an umlaut over the "u"
78 Surname has an umlaut over the "o"
87 Surname could be Twizke or Trvizke
91 Surname is blurred by a crease in the original manuscript--looks like
either Kreis or Krus or may have had more letters following these
92 Surname is blurred by a crease in the original manuscript--looks like
Christensen or Christensia
93 Surname is blurred by a crease in the original manuscript--looks like
Kraass, Kraup or Krauss
96 Surname could be Hausen
107 Surname has an umlaut over the "o"
108-109 Final letters of surname unclear: could be Treutz, Trentz, Trenk,
or Treuk
115 Surname difficult to decipher, may be Schnaor or Schnior or Schrior
119 Surname difficult to decipher because final letters are blurred by a
crease in the original document: Could be von Broost, von Broot or
von Broos
130 Final two letters of surname may be "oc" making the name Ebelloc
157-163 Surname has an umlaut over the "o"
182 Surname may have an umlaut over the "u"
