Bark Eliza Thornton

Bremen, Germany to New Orleans
30 October 1845

DISTRICT OF MISSISSIPPI - PORT OF NEW ORLEANS
I, J. L. Little, Master or Commander of the Barque E. Thornton, do solemnly, sincerely and truly swear, that the within list, signed by me and now delivered to the Collector of this District, contains the names of all the passengers, taken on board the said Barque at the Port of Bremen or at any time since, and that all matters therein set forth are, according to the best of my knowledge and belief, just and true. I do further swear, that one of the said Passengers have died on the voyage.
Sworn before me, this 30th day of Octr 1845. (Signature obscured by hole in list)
LIST OF PASSENGERS taken on board the Bark Eliza Thornton whereof John L. Lie?ts is Master, at the Port of Bremerhaven and bound for New-Orleans.
Columns represent: names, age, sex, and occupation. All passengers except one were listed in the "country to which they belong" column as from Germany. The exception and the passenger who died were identified in and following the occupation column. There were no entries in the "country of which they intend to become inhabitants" or "number who have died on the passage" columns. A few adults had no entries in the occupation column, and some minor children had entries.

Transcriber's Notes:

* Handwriting was of careless and inconsistent style, and appears
to have been written in haste. The original list was also in
poor condition, with holes and creases obscuring some data.
Many of the Bremen passenger lists are quite meticulous, with
original German spelling and villages of origin, but the
Captain or crew member who made this list anglicized most
given names, and misspelled some given names and surnames
that have been verified from other records (see Personal
   Notes below).

* Passenger numbers have been added for reference, and did not
   appear on the original list.

* The Captain's surname is uncertain: In first line of the
cover statement, it appears to be Little, but his signature
has been obliterated. In list heading, it resembles Liests,
   but writing is dull.

8,9 There is a hole in the original list where ages and
sex should be, and they are provided here by the
transcriber from their German birth records.
15 Correct surname may be Lutjen (umlaut over u).
16 Correct spelling of surname would be Cordes.
 17 See 15.
19 The writer has used Adeline as an anglicization of
          the north German name Adelheid.
20 Correct given name is known to have been Gerd.
25 The writer has used Gracia as an anglicization of
          the north German name Gesche.
34 Correct spelling of surname was Ratjen.
36 Aug is an abbreviation of August or Augustus.
43 Sarah is an error, as name is known to have been
          Christina (often shortened to Stena).
54-59 Surname should be Meyer. 55 and 58 see 25 note.
59 Correct given name is known to have been Cord.
63 Given name should be Melchor, and surname should be
          Brunjes (umlaut over u).
 64 - 67 See 63 note.
 69 See 25 note.
71 Correct given name is known to have been Gevert.
72 There should be no "e" on Claus.
 76 See 19 and 63 notes.
 77 See 63 note.
78 See 63 note. Correct given name is Gevert.
79 - 84 Correct spelling of surname is Loden (unlaut over
          o). For 83 see 25.
85 Same as above. Correct given name was Meta.
88 Died is abbreviation of Diedrich, sometimes
          anglicized to Richard.
 89,95 See 19 note.
 96 See 72 note.
100 - 103 Bart is abbreviation of Barthold. Correct spelling
          of surname was Gestmann.
104 Lutje should have had umlaut over u, and was often
          anglicized to Louis in USA.
111 - 113 Correct spelling of surname was Mein.
128 Correct spelling of surname was Mangels.
138 XXX these two passengers failed to be transcribed on
original transcription. They are on the original
          manifest.
141 - 142 Correct surname may have been Brunkhorst.
152 Casp is an abbreviation of Casper.
160 Should probably have been Herm (abbreviation for
          Herman).
166 Surname should probably have been Phiefer.
168 See 36 note.

Personal Notes:

More than a dozen families and individuals on this ship, who came from the
Kingdom of Hanover north and east of Bremen, joined the German settlement
in Cole Camp area of north Benton County, Missouri and the adjoining sections
of northwest Morgan County, Missouri. Following are those known, listed
with their full names and the original German spelling (ue and oe substituted
for umlaut over u, e):

  5-10  Johann Wilhelm Schluesing family from Zeven, Hanover;
        transcriber's great-great-grandparents. John age 2
became my grandmother's father 27 years later. According
to family legend, they left Germany because their home in
Zeven burned. Then as they were departing the ship at New
Orleans, the mother Margaret and Jacob age 4 fell into the
water, but only the mother could be rescued. A daughter was
born three weeks later at St Louis, and baptized in Benton
        County the following February.

"William" Schluesing homesteaded land in Morgan County near
Florence, and died there 1874. Their last child, born in
Missouri 1851, was named Jacob in honor of the son lost six
years earlier, and he too met an untimely death later, in a
        train crash.
