I, Wm. Willigerod, Master of the Steamship Elbe, do solemnly, sincerely and truly declare that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of the city of New York is a full and perfect list of all the passengers taken on board of the said steamship at Bremen and Southampton from which port said steamship has now arrived; and that on said list is truly designated the age, the sex and the occupation of each of said passengers, the part of the vessel occupied by each during the passage, the country to which each belongs, and also the country of which it is intended by each to become an inhabitant; and that said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of said passengers who have died on said voyage, and the names and ages of those who died.

the transcriber, or is used to call your attention to additional information

? Indicates a letter or number which could not be determined due to the condition
of the manifest or handwriting of the original recorder.
^ A "^" in a name indicates an entry where the original has abbreviated a name
and usually the final letter or letter is written in an upper case position,
i.e. passenger 91: Franz^ka most likely means the name is Franziska or
passenger 11: Aug^e meaning Auguste.
* The column for passenger location during the journey has been omitted:
Presumably passengers # 1- 60 were listed in the first cabin; passengers
61-151 were listed as travelling in second cabin; passengers 152-353 were
listed as travelling in steerage.
* The final column has also been omitted. It indicated whether the passenger
was "transient" or "intending a protracted sojourn." All passengers
numbered 1-151 were listed as transient; passengers 152-353 were listed as
intending a protracted sojourn, i.e. settling in the new country.
* The entries for passengers numbered 1-10, 12-25, 28-32, 34-60, 63-64, 71-81,
99-113, 144-149, 158, 167, 240, 260-261, 292-294, 312, 341-342, 351 seem to
have been erased. For the most part they are illegible, but I have entered
whatever information is legible on those lines.
The erased lines seem to be a deletion of passengers who were American citizens--
perhaps to separate those travelling under a U.S. passport from all others.
33 - Occupation listed as: captain of the German navy.
68 - Surname has an umlaut over the "u"
69- 70 - Surname has an umlaut over the "o"
68- 70 - These three passengers seem to be travelling together because the
baggage listed is 7 pieces and the brackets indicate the 7 pieces for
the three lines; however, the surnames are definetely spelled differently.
91 - Passenger's baggage column is bracketed together with those entries
above it--she may have been travelling with them.
98 - Surname has an umlaut over the "a"
118 - Surname has an umlaut over the "u"
119 - Surname has an umlaut over the "o"
124-126 - Baggage for these three is bracketed together; thus, they were
probably travelling together.
129 - Surname seems to have an umlaut over the "a"
130 - Surname has an umlaut over the "o"
134-136 - Baggage entry indicates these three were travelling together.
Grunhut has an umlaut over the "u." Age for
135 - was written 1 1/2.
136 - Age for 136 is blurred, looks like 28
139 - Surname has an umlaut over the "o"
172 - Age was written as 10 1/2
177 - Surname has an umlaut over the "a"; first letter of surname may be a P
or a T, thus: Parber, or Tarber
183 - Passenger's baggage line seems to be bracketed with the following ones,
184-186 - perhaps they were travelling together.
187-189 - Second letter of surname is blurred by a crease in the original:
may be Wandler, Wendler, or Wundler
190-195 - Surname has an umlaut over the "o"
208 - Surname has an umlaut over the "o". Age was written as 2 1/2.
209 - First letter of surname looks like an "L" thus Lroth
217-219 - Surname has an umlaut over the "u"

246 - Baggage number is 2--bracketed with the passenger above
perhaps the two travelling together.
248 - Surname has an umlaut over the "o"
249 - Age is blurred--looks like 17
250-252 - Surname may have an umlaut over the "u"
254 - Final letter of surname may be "c" or "e" thus: Greic or Greie
263 - Age was written as 2 1/2.
264 - Surname has an umlaut over the "u"; final letter unclear, looks like "b"
thus Kuheb, or "t" thus Kuhet (see Reviewer's note)
265 - Age was written as ? 1/2, with the questionable number unreadable.
267-272 - Surname has an umlaut over the "u"
274 - Surname blurred by a mark on the paper, may be either Rogitzka,
