So help me God. (signed) H. Steengrafe

Transcriber's Notes:
The use of an * indicates an omission or error made by the original recorder.
The use of a ? indicates a word or letters that could not be read, due to the
quality of the original document.
The Sworn To date is one day after the recorded date. The date on the Cover
Page is 30 August 1857.
Ages are in years unless noted with a "y" for years and/or an "m" for months.
Passenger 1 was in first cabin, passengers 2 through 30 were in second cabin,
passengers 31 through 44 were in the deck house, and passengers 45 through
242 were between decks.
The original recorder of this manifest used ditto marks extensively, but
passengers 7 through 10 did not have ditto marks in the column for the part
of the vessel occupied by each passenger during the voyage.
The words "Pensilvania" and "taylor", which appear numerous times, are likely
mis-spellings of "Pennsylvania" and "tailor". The word "Saxony" is mis-spelled
many times as "Saxoni" and "Saxonia".
Passenger Notes:
4 Surname includes an umlaut.
8-9 Destination appears to be mis-spelling of "Cincinnati".
17 Surname includes an umlaut.
20 Given name appears to be Friedericke with the "e" crossed out.
25 Given name appears to be an abbreviation of "Catharine".
28 Given name appears to be an abbreviation of "Catharine". Surname includes
an umlaut. Age was "19" crossed out and overwritten as "22" by the original
recorder.
29 Surname includes an umlaut. Destination column contains no location or
ditto marks; it contains a line identical to that used in the occupation
column for females and children.
30 Surname includes an umlaut.
32-33 Destination appears to be a mis-spelling of "Milwaukee".
34-35 Surname includes an umlaut.
42-43 Surname includes an umlaut.
44 Surname does not include an umlaut, which appears to be an oversight since
this 4 year old appears to be of the same family as passengers 42 and 43.
48 Destination appears to be mis-written "New York".
59 Surname recorded with only one "n" although preceding and following
passengers, apparently from the same family are spelled with two.
63-67 Destination appears to be mis-written "New York" for passenger 63 with
ditto marks for passengers 64 through 67.
89 Surname includes an umlaut.
103 Surname includes an umlaut.
107-115 Surname includes an umlaut.
151-157 Surname includes an umlaut.
158-162 Destination appears to be mis-spelling of "Iowa".
164 Destination appears to be mis-spelling of "Iowa".
173 Surname includes an umlaut.
200-202 Surname includes an umlaut.
204 Destination appears to be a mis-spelling of "Chicago".
205 Occupation appears to be a mis-spelling of "barber".
212-213 Surname includes an umlaut.
215-221 the column headed by "The country to which they severally belong" for
these passengers was originally filled in with ditto marks relating to
"Bavaria", but for passengers 215 and 218, "United States" was overwritten
in a different hand, even though it is likely that designation should only
apply to the Deppich family, passengers 215 through 219.
229-231 Surname includes an umlaut.
Correspondence 7/12/02 passenger #145 Eichholz
I am just beginning to play with the genealogy on my Father's side and I
am less than a novice at this time. I have come across a wonderful old
(reproduction) photograph of this family. Where the photo was made is
unknown. To the best of my knowledge, Emmanuel is my Great Grandfather.
Other relatives noted in the picture are Zike, Moses, Gottlieb, and
Samuel Eichholz.
If someone out there has further information and would like to contact
me, please do at Melanie Eichholz Lowe
Correspondence added 10-31-2005, # 116, 117, 119 WARNKE
My great, great, great grandfather Wilhelm Warnke (passenger 116 of the
Bark Coriolan), whose real surname is Warneke, was married to Elisabeth
Meyer (Warneke, passenger 117). Together, they had a son Wilhelm Joseph
(passenger 119), whose first name later changed to William sometime while
in the United States. William died in Illinois in 1913 of pneumonia. He
had a son named Edward, who was drafted into WWI. Edward had a son named
John Edward, who served during WWII in the Navy. Although William left
Prussia at the age of 6, having been born and baptized there in
NordRhein-Westfalen, he still considered himself Prussian at the time of
the 1880 U.S. census.
Sincerely,
Jeremy Warneke, grandson of John Edward
