Transcriber's Notes:
* An asterisk indicates an error on the part of the original recorder not the transcriber,
or is used to call attention to additional information in the transcriber notes.
Question marks replace illegible information or letters. This manifest is in very poor condition
and many names as well as other information are completely illegible.
The pages on this film are not numbered so finding a particular ship can be difficult.
However, there is a system of numbering the manifests that is a part of the National
Archives file system on Chinese persons. These numbers are included in the identification
of the film and reel numbers below.
For passengers bound for San Francisco, passengers' names and ages are followed by a stamp
that varies depending on the disposition of the passenger.
Passengers allowed to land have the following stamp:
Landed Collectors order (blank with a month and day date written in) 1892 by Insp's (blank
for a name, in this case O'Leary. There are passengers landed by other inspectors noted below).
Passengers not allowed to land have one of two different stamps:
Landing Refused Habeas Corpus U.S.D.C. Case followed by a number. These passengers were
probably allowed to land, but not to freely enter the country. The National Archives
should have a file for these passengers describing what happened to them.
Landing Refused Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date).
For passengers bound for a further port there are two possible dispositions:
Landed "I.T." Transit List followed by a number
Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date)
The following columns had no entries and are not included in the table:
Height
Complexion
Color of Eyes
Physical Marks or Peculiarities and Facts of Identification
Occupation is Grocer for all passengers except as noted below.
Last Residence entries for passengers bound for Havana, Panama and Salina Cruz are confusing.
There are two groups of two words each entered for most passengers. However, some passengers
have one group of two words and ditto marks. I have taken the dittos to refer to the first
word in the group of two words, which is at the top of the column.
Salina Cruz is on the Pacific coast of Mexico.
According to the National Archives branch in San Bruno, California it is possible that they have
some information on any Chinese passenger who arrived in San Francisco after 1886.
2 Inspector was Sprague.
6 Last Residence looks something like Canneta.
8 Third name is Wo or Mo.
10 Last Residence appears to be some place in Jefferson Co. Montana.
23 Last Residence looks like Scales or Acales with a county name of six letters, possible Lassen.
there are no tall letters except the initial letter, which looks most like a T. There are no
California counties beginning with T that have no other tall letters. Passenger 50 also has
the entry Scales with Sierra Co Cal but the county name in this entry does not look at all
like Sierra.
36 Second name is Yok or Yot.
45 Second name could be Poon or Toon.
50 Last Residence looks like Scales, Sierra Co Cal. Second name might be Kee.
52 Inspector was Sprague.
56 Last Residence is Park City Summit Co. Utah.
61-62 Occupation is "Woman."
63 Last Residence is both Honolulu and Siskiyou Co Cal.
64 Inspector was Sprague.
75 Inspector was Sprague.
78 Inspector was E.H. Hills.
79 Occupation is Chinese Consular Service.
80 Occupation is Servant.
79-80 Accredited to President Yang Woo Benevolent Association & servant.
81-84, 88-93 Traveled by SPRR Sept 3, 1895.
98 Occupation is "wife of above, Woman."
111 Traveled by SPRR Sept 3, 1895.
113 Occupation is "Woman."
