Personal Notes
Passengers 129, 130 and 161 I believe to be my Smith ancestors that
emigrated from Ireland and settled in Newark, N.J. I believe Ann Smith,
passenger no. 161, to be my great great grandmother. Her maiden name was
Cahill. James and Peter Smith, referred to as passengers 129 and 130, were
her sons born in Ireland. Passenger no. 162, Patr, could have been an infant
son of hers. There is no record of her husband, Peter Smith, on this ship's
passenger list. He was my great great grandfather and born in Ireland as well.
I have found a Peter Smith on a ship a few days later which arrived in New York
which could have been him. Peter Smith's occupation was a tailor. He lived
until November 1874 in Newark. He is buried at St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery
in nearby Belleville, NJ. Also buried with him are son James mentioned above
and two other infant children who died in the 1850's.
Peter and Ann's first son born in the U.S. was Michael Smith. He was born
in Newark on October 6, 1845. He was my great grandfather. He was a Civil War
veteran and served as a drummer boy in Co. E, 37th New Jersey Infantry Regiment.
(Click here to see the 37th NJ Infantry's Regimental Flag). His regiment served
on the front lines of the siege at Petersburg, Virginia, which occurred the last
year of the war between 1864-65.
After the Civil War Michael Smith worked as a hatter in a Newark factory.
A hatter, or hat maker, in this time period was a skilled workman. In December
1869 Michael married Esther Braughal in Newark. She was also a first generation
Irish American. In 1870 Micheal's hat factory moved to nearby Orange, also in
Essex County, NJ. He remained in the hat trade until he died in December 1904.
Micheal and Esther Smith had 10 children. Their sixth child, Andrew Francis
Smith, was my grandfather. He was born in Orange in March 1880.
Esther Braughal Smith lived a long life and passed away in February 1941
at the age of 86. One event which occurred early in her life at the age of
six in Newark she remembered to her dying day. The event was that in February
1860 she met presidential candidate Abraham Lincoln at a political rally and
shook his hand. Esther is buried with husband Michael, five of her children,
a daughter-in-law, and grand daughter at St. John's RC Cemetery in Orange, NJ.
