SS Catalonia
I, Arthur Talbot , Master of the S.S. "Catalonia" do solemnly, sincerely, and truly declare that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of Boston is a full and perfect List of all passengers taken on board the said vessel at Liverpool and Queenstown from which port the said vessel has now arrived; and that on the said list are truly designated the age, sex, and calling of each of the said passengers, the location of the compartment or space occupied by each during the passage, the country of the citizenship of each, and also the destination or location intended by each; and that the said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of the said passengers who have died on the said voyage, and the dates and causes of death, and the names and ages of those who died; also of the pieces of baggage of each; also a true statement, so far as it can be ascertained, with reference to the intention of each alien passenger as to a protracted sojurn in this country. So help me God.

Transcriber's Notes:
* An asterisk indicates an error on the part of the original recorder, not
the transcriber, or is used to call your attention to additional information
in the transcriber's notes.
? Indicates a letter or number which could not be determined due to the
condition of the manifest or handwriting of the original recorder.
* The reader must understand that passenger lists were hand written using pen
points dipped in inkwells. These lists were written on printed forms with
printed column headings. The information presented concerning each passenger
was confined to a separate line. These papers were rolled or folded for
storage. They were later photostated and the images placed on microfilm for
permanent storage. Transcribing this information into typed form involves
contending with changing handwriting styles of two recorders, ink smudges,
adhesive tape on tears, holes, tears and sometimes large black areas of
light leakage affecting the film. In cases where letters were hard to read
or seemed to represent words that made little sense, notes are offered by
passenger number.
* ISTG protocol calls for names to be spelled out rather than follow the
recorder's practice of using "do" for ditto for names repeated below one
another. This means that when a family group all have question marks in
their names, there are no other samples to check for a desired spelling.
Only one was present, followed by a ditto.
* One death was listed, that of passenger #1138 Corm Johnson, 10, child. "died
26 April 1883, cause Cerebral meningitis." The death column has therefore
been eliminated, and another notation is listed in the Passenger Notes
below.
* Due to space constraints the transcriber used abbreviations, mostly under
calling. Hskpr for housekeeper; stone for stonecutter; ?room for groom?
(figure eight type first letter); cottier was a tenant farmer; farrier
was a shoer of horses; mech for mechanic; wever is as as spelled, but
probably should be weaver; an m, a or u, ch followed by a small letter y,
elevated with a dash under it is an abbreviation, for something other than
mechanic, possibly machinery for machinist; garden for gardener; cloth for
cloth cleaner; joiner was a cabinetmaker rather than a general carpenter;
cellar for cellar man; marble for marble mason; brick for brickmaker; shoe
for shoemaker; coffee for coffee merchant; merch for merchant; wood for a
word illegible after four letters; and ,finally, gent for gentleman.
Passenger Notes:
#338 - While Lehane is a more recognizable spelling, it is clearly Lehone.
#343 - After the m is a heavy black streak which may or may be more letters.
#345 - While described as female, the name is spelled Eugene, not Eugenia.
#371 - Ink blot. Probably Patrick.
#372 - Only last of name visible. Appears to have a crossed t. Could also be
Patrick
#375 - May be a recorder error. Wrote a third l, but Kelleher is a more common
spelling of the name.
#460 - Appears to have been written 22, then written over to 21.
#463 - The usual h was missing from end of the first name.
#533 - The first digit of the age is hard to read. May be a six.
#534 - The recorder used the abbreviation custom of the period. It appears to
be Bartt followed by a small letter, elevated, with an underscore
stroke under it. It could be a w, suggesting the name, Bartholomew.
#543 - While not a readily recognizable name, it appears to be Rorome.
#546 - The small letter (or two) between the r and the t suggest an undotted i
or an n or a. The name suggests how Martin would sound to a person not
used to a heavy Irish accent with trilled R's.
#555 and #556 - Two children were skipped, then added after strikeovers. Nora
is clear. The missing letters in 555 cannot even be guessed.
#578 - There is clearly no a before the y.
#592 - Since the i in Patrick was not dotted, this surname might also be read
as Keliher with only one l.
Personal Notes:
Passenger #80, Julia Murphy, is the transcriber's paternal grandmother. She
traveled with her sister, Ellen, who was listed as passenger #387. This
should caution the reader not to assume family are always listed together on
a list. Two years later their parents and four other siblings arrived in
Boston on the same ship. They did happen to be listed as a family group.
