Transcriber's notes:
* An asterisk indicates an error on the part of the original
recorder, not the transcriber, or is used to call your attention
to additional information in the transcriber's notes.
? Indicates a letter or number which could not be determined due
to the condition of the manifest or handwriting of the original
recorder.
* The word "Good" in the column "Whether Visitors Only or
Intending to be Permanent Settlers" makes little sense to the
transcriber. However, it is clearly the word "Good" and it is
dittoed ("do") from passenger number 1 all the way down to
passenger number 42.
* D.R.L G?eason's name was stamped (as with a rubber stamp),
not a signature. The name could be Greason or Gleason.
Also, letters D, R and L are not very clear.
Passenger # 1 - A largely undecipherable note in the "Date and
Cause of Death" Column, perhaps a person's signature (my
guess: J. Hole) followed by the word "by" and then three
capital letters (guess: USG). This is an identical entry
to the one made in the same place, same column, as on the
SS Ethelred which arrived Boston 24 July 1890, the day
following the arrival of the Canadian. No other notes
were made anywhere in the "Date and Cause of Death" column.
Passenger # 1 & 2 - Bracket at the word "Family" connected the
two passengers
Passenger # 5 & 6 - Bracket at the word "Family" connected the
two passengers
Passenger # 7 - First digit of the age of passenger 7 is not
clear. Probably a 5, making Mrs. Smith 56 but it could
be a 2 (for 26).
Passenger # 8 - Very difficult to decipher the surname of this
passenger. Although it is a clear entry, not smudged or
darkened, the transcriber just cannot decipher the first
two letters. The name could possibly be Nuille or Wuille
Muille or Mille or Neville or something entirely different.
Passenger # 12 - Passenger's first name is probably May but
could possibly be Mary - not clear to transcriber
Passenger # 14 & 15 - Bracket at the word "Family" connected the
two passengers
Passenger # 16 & 17 - Both passengers named Flinn, both headed
to Providence and listed together, one immediately after
the other, possibly mother and daughter. However, Native
Country (Scotland) for Sarah is dittoed from previous
passenger and Native country for Eliza is Ireland. The
person who penned this passenger list, when entering
information for families, frequently waited until the last
(bottom) family member to make a particular entry and
still wrote "do" above, as though he were dittoing upwards.
Transcriber suspects that Sarah Flinn's native country
was Ireland.
Passenger # 18 - Native country of Mrs. Kieding is probably Spain
but the entry is not real clear - it could be something else.
Passenger # 20 - 23 - Bracket at the word "Family" connected the
four passengers
Passenger # 27 & 28 - Bracket connected the two passengers
Passenger # 34 - 40 - Bracket connects the seven members of this
family
Passenger # 44 & 45 - "Calling" entry may be "Whouse Girl" or
"Cohouse Girl" - unclear to transcriber - even the second
word might not be Girl - just not clear.
Passenger # 48 - 50 - A bracket connects the three passengers.
Native country (England) for passenger 48 (James) is
dittoed from previous passenger. Native country for #49
is clearly written "Scotland" and then #50 dittoed that
of #49. Presumably brothers, transcriber's guess is that
all three were from Scotland.
Passenger # 54 - 58 - Bracket connects the family of five.
Passenger # 66 & 67 - Transcriber is very uncertain of surname.
Begins with Mc but third letter is not at all clear.
"...rgan" are definitely the last four letters. Surname
of passenger 67 (Annie) is dittoed from #66, John, above.
Passenger # 68 - No first name is listed but small marks on the
list may be ditto marks, signifying that her given name
may be the same as that of the passenger above, which is
"Annie"
Passenger # 69 - Passenger's surname could possible be McColl,
instead of McCall. Not clear.
Passenger # 74 - Transcriber is uncertain about spelling of
surname. Is not clear.
Passenger # 76 - The ink of the second digit of the age of
passenger Broderick is smeared - she could be 20 or 21
Passenger # 78 - Surname could be Darlin or Davlin
Passenger # 84 & 85 - Bracket connected these two passengers
Passenger # 93 - Surname is unclear
Passenger # 99 - "Intended Destination or Location" is,
indeed, listed as Ireland, despite the fact that she is
listed as a settler in the last column
Passenger #106 & 107 - Bracket connects the two passengers
Passenger #109 - From passenger 109 down to the bottom of the
list, no other baggage is mentioned - no entries for
number of pieces of baggage.
Passenger #110 - Passenger's surname unclear to transcriber.
Could possibly be Garum or Gorum or Gorm or Garm.
Also, second digit of age is smeared - could be 20 or 21.
Passenger #117 & 118 - Brackets connect the two passengers
together. Second letter of surname is unreadable.
Could be Curran or Cirran
Passenger #135 - Second digit of age is unreadable - virtually
missing
Passenger #136 - Name is undecipherable. First three letters
are clearly Lee but the third is not clear - could be
the letter "o" and "mudley" is clearly the the end of
the name. Also not clear is whether this is one word
or two. Then, in the "Calling" column, the first word
is not clear. "Danciep" is best guess.
Passenger #137 - The entry in the "Calling" column is dittoed
from the passenger above.
