Transcriber's Notes:

* An asterisk indicates an error on the part of the original recorder, not
the transcriber, or is used to call your attention to additional information
  in the transcriber's notes.

? Indicates a letter or number which could not be determined due to the
condition of the manifest or handwriting of the original recorder.

Marked a City List.

There are 2 dates on the list, but 6 May 1834 is probably when it was written
on board ship, as it was sworn to by the Mayor of Baltimore on 26 May 1834.

The list recorded that there were 14 children, but due to smudges it was not
possible to see where they all were on list. Also, no names were recorded for
those who were traveling with the named head of each group.

Towns spelled as found.

Reviewer's note: Ca?juts should probably be Cajute (First Class).
Kopfe is spelled with o Umlaut.
Erwachsen means adult, Kind means child, Mann means male,
Frau is a woman, Tochter is daughter.
Mansperson is "male person", the spelling should be with
two n's. This is an old word and is not used any more.

1 second initial could be T or F.
6 large dark smudge over name, cannot be sure of number of letters,
letter before e could be n.
Reviewer's note: the last name could be Wesselmann.
  15 surname looks like Esten.
20 surname could be Brathtrupp or Brachtrupp, large smudge here.
21 large smudge over most of name.
22 smudge still in this area, cannot be sure of first letter.
24 surname looks like Schroder or Schrider.
  32 cannot read age.
34 smudge over age, could be in the 30's.
35 there is possibly more than 1 child, but cannot be sure due to
large smudge, and cannot read age.
36 surname looks like Brels or Brelo.
37 surname could be Fricke or Fruke.
40 surname could be Schwacke or Schwaike.
46 there could be more than 1 child here, but large smudge.
  49 surname probably Fortmann.
76 second letter in surname could be r, Kr??er or Kr???er, large smudge.

Correspondence 02/16/2005 passengers #4 & 8 Koppelmann
J.H. Koppelmann: Johann Hermann Koppelmann (1811-1887), settled in the
Gardenville area of Baltimore County, after emigrating from northwest
Germany, now known as Lower Saxony. From 1850 on, he farmed just north of
the city of Baltimore with his wife, Anna Catherina Maseman Koppelmann
(1803-1881), and his two sons, John Henry and John George Koppelmann, within
a large community of immigrant German Lutheran farmers. We believe that the
Ann Koppelman listed on the same passenger list is Johann Hermann
Koppelmann's sister, Anna Catherina Koppelmann, b. 1810. For further
information about this branch of Lutheran Baltimore Koppelmans from Lower
Saxony, vist http://www.bol.ucla.edu/~wald .

Thank you so much for transcribing this passenger list! BTW, Batbergen is
Badbergen; Gerden and Gerde are Gehrde, and Quakenbrug is Quackenbruck.
Badbergen and Gehrde are neighboring villages near the town of Quackenbruck
in Lower Saxony; Kloppenburg is also a town in the same region.

Correspondence 22. October 2005:
Burgermeister Smidt:

Burgermeister (with u Umlaut) is the German word for mayor. Dr. Johann Smidt,
mayor of Bremen and founder of Bremerhaven, lived from 1773 to 1857. From 1792 -
1794, he studied at the University of Jena Theology and Philosophy. He was
elected as Senator for Bremen on December 13, 1800.

He soon made a name for himself and was sent to Napoleon's headquarters in
Frankfurt/Main as the representative for Bremen. Since Dr. Smidt had been a
diligent representative of Bremen during hard times, it was logical to send him
to the Vienna Congress in 1814/1815.

One of his many achievements there was to keep Bremen's sovereignty.
The lower part of the Weser River was not deep enough for ocean-going sailing
ships to load and unload in Bremen. Bremen merchant traffic went through the
Kingdom of Oldenburg and it became necessary to build a deep sea harbour for
Bremen. On January 11, 1827 he bought land for the city of Bremen for 73658
Taler from the Dutchy of Hannover, situated at the estuary of the river Weser.
On July 1, 1827 the building of a new harbour was started. This was the
beginning of the new city of Bremerhaven, founded by Mayor Dr. Johann Smidt.

It took years until the new city was accepted by merchants, ships and sailors but
finally, in 1851, Bremerhaven gained city rights. In later years and with more
modern techniques, it became possible to keep the river Weser open for larger
ships and in 1888, ocean-going vessels could use the Bremen harbour again.
Please see Mayor Smidt and Bremerhaven for more detailed information
on Mayor Dr. Smidt. Both websites also have a picture of the Mayor. One can but
assume that the Bremen Brig Burgermeister Smidt was named after the mayor of
Bremen at the time (see below).

There is a family connection to Dr. Smidt and my family. My great-great-
grandfather, Robert Boyes, was a good acquaintance or friend of Dr. Smidt's.
According to family he helped Dr. Smidt chose the land for Bremerhaven. In the
early 1920s, a grandson of Dr. Smidt's went to Angola with his wife. They had
their coffe plantation next to my grandparents' coffee plantation. Contact the
Reviewer for more information.

The Boyes where merchants in Bremen. Robert Boyes left England in 1792 for
Bremen. In 1795 he was sworn in as Citizen of Bremen. More information on the
Boyes and Smidt families can be found at Ortsfamilienbuch Vegesack, the
archives of "Die Maus", Bremen's Genealogical Society.

Bremen Brig Burgermeister Smidt:
The Bremen Brig Burgermeister (with u Umlaut) was built by shipwright Johann
Lange for J. F. W. Iken & Co. in Vegesack/Grohn, now suburbs of Bremen. She was
launched on August 4th, 1829. The Bremen firm Carl Focke Wwe. & Sohn purchased
her in 1846. For more information on the Burgermeister Smidt, see Palmer's List
of Merchant Vessels. This website, the Focke Museum in Bremen, has a picture
of an oil painting of this ship.

Correspondence added 1-28-2006, passenger 13, FAUBEL
A. Faubel is my g-g-g-g-grandfather, Adam Faubel. I located his emigration
record through the work of Dr. Kurt Gunther who documented Hessian Emigrants to
America (published in Germanic Genealogist, Number 15, Page 376). He has him listed
as Adam Vaupel of Lendorf (County of Homberg). I located him on the ISTG list by finding
the man he travelled with from his town - Heinrich Hotte (passenger #12)

Adam Faubel (eventually became Vaubel) settled in the area of Fryeburg, Pusheta Township,
Ohio. I located him in the 1840 census. He appears to have lived his entire life in the
area other than a short stint around 1850 in Harrison Township, Ohio. He married Anna Kuhn
and had a large family. He died in Fryeburg on 7 February 1901 just a few months shy of his
90th birthay. If anyone wished to contact me regarding this family line they may do so
at Mary Borkovitz
