Passengers 1011 and 1018 are stamped "deported". * Lines 2, 5, 12, 14, 17 - 21, 28 and 29. Transcriber typed what could be seen. * Many of the numbers and dates written in over the passenger lines are notations made for immigration status by the Immigration and Naturalization Service * Manifest lists country first, for ease in reading city has been typed first * Permanent residence within the meaning of this manifest shall be actual or intended residence for one year or more. * Column 2 is used for Government officials only. This is blank except for passengers under 16 years and for those there's a stamp "under 16" Reviewer's Note: Most passengers have numbers like 5/0684 written in the read/write coloumn. This means they were tested for their reading ability. The first number is a number for the language, the next 4 numbers a the numbers for a certain sentence in that language. Quite a few lines were crossed out on this page of the manifest. Most likely these passengers did not even board the ship, although there is not remark "did not board".
